Back to original post...

A week or so ago, my B&O suddenly sounded really rubbish. All bass had gone and it sounded like a transistor radio.
Healed itself with an off and on, but maybe this has happened to the OP?

The B&) sounds immense if running properly. I had premium before and I can certainly appreciate the difference

I was really surprised at how good the B&O sounds in my Vanq Volante. I had two DB9s with the rubbish Linn 950 and with the top down the sound was barely adequate. The B&O top down sounds far superior to the Linn 950 ever did top up. The Premium in my DBS coupe sounds very good, but not quite as good as the B&O.

I think comparing systems has to be like for like, meaning DB9 won't sound the same as a Vantage, or a Rapide.

Its really really good in my Rapide (and I'm a bit of an audiophile and work with sound a lot) - sounds really balanced, crisp and punchy. OK - it only sounds good on non FM sources. Due to its 'designed in the 50's tech spec' the FM sounds terrible - especially if you compare it to DAB in your 'this year's model' DD.

You may have an amp channel down or a speaker down...?

Is it a case of needing a higher quality input to notice a substantial difference ?

I've had all 3, in my opinion the order is STD, B&O, Premium.
B&O really is overrated and unajustable frown

Very much - a lot of people seem to assume they can play poor quality input files (typically 128kps mp3 files via Bluetooth streaming) and expect a good system to compensate and a) produce a decent sound output, and b) to perform better than a lower quality system also playing the same poor quality input files. This accounts for a lot of the feedback where people say system X is cr@p, or system A sounds no better than system B.

Basic rule of thumb is that the sound output quality is going to be limited by the lowest quality item in the whole chain.

The other significant point is we all have different ears and different expectations of what sounds "good".

That's a good point and something many folk willl overlook. Thing is, I'm using CDs which are presumably better quality input than any MP3, and they still sound terrible.

Big fan of ye olde CD's as they are not compressed audio - always better than any MP3 (although you will be pushed to tell if you are using 320kbps compression). Have you cleaned the needle? Seriously mine sounds absolutely fab - was listening to some Robert Miles on it the other day and yet again thinking how good, balanced and clean it sounded throughout the 'rev' range! In what way does it sound 'bad' - does it lack certain frequencies/presence/bass/top end tweet tweet? Have you put an ear to all speakers in turn?

For my taste in music (Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, and Punjabi MC), I really did struggle adjusting the B&O system in my DBS. It kinda sounded OK, but just much better (to my ears) with the premium audio. Unfortunately, I couldn’t resist speccing B&O on my new AMR for the rising tweeters (Awesome!!), and with the deposit now paid, I’m not sure I will be able to change my spec for the premium setup. This said, if I do end up stuck with the B&O, I will of course take everything I’ve said back and instead rave on about how great the B&O setup is thumbup

BTW, you can expect the same behaviour from me when I mention anything to do with Sportshift-gate, colour-gate, seat-gate, and now we can add B&O-gate evil

I will of course, only promote what I have. biggrin

See my earlier post about the differences between B&O and Premium (=Alpine) audio system.

The B&O is great, but uses (too) much compression/DSPs/limiters, the Premium systems much less, so the latter has more dynamic range (even distortion if you put it really loud) and therefore sounds more natural than the artificial B&O.

Drove 5 years with each of these systems, so when buying another car, I would go for premium (but in my DBS B&O was "standard").

Nothing wrong with ZZ Top Rob. Saw them at Manchester Appollo in July and they were superb. Nice small venue and Billy Gibbons really is one of the best Blues Rock guitarists of all time. Took me back to when I last saw them at Donnington when I was 16 and that was some time ago smile
