Awesome amount of interest on this......

This is going to be a great day.... Don't forget the more cars we have, the cheaper it becomes.... biggrin

Anyone could recommend a Trackday Insurance Company? Not sure if it's a good idea to ask my own insurance broker, would they look at me as a mad dangerous person and raise my premium next year? biggrin

Done plenty of trackdays with my other car but never insured it. The Vantage is in a different price category though...

Out of interest I got a quote from insuremytrackday.com

They wanted £646 for 1 day of insurance with an excess of £5800 on a car value of £72000. So do I recommend them? Well not to the extent that I will be taking up this offer, no. AFAIK the excess on the trackway cover included in the Locktons policy is 10% and Locktons have always given me comedy quotes at renewal time so I've never used them.

Consequently, I will be taking it easy and staying out of trouble biggrin

I’ve used Competition Car Insurance many times for other cars (although usually for a value of £10-15k). Premiums were usually about £100-120 for that value with a 10% excess.

Not insuring is, in effect, self-insuring. Plenty of people do it and it's absolutely fine so long as you understand you cannot kick up a fuss if I or anyone else plough straight into your £72,000 asset at no fault of your own.

Everyone's view on trackday insurance will be different. Here's mine:

If my £5k track car was totalled, I would be able to go out and immediately buy another.
If my £20k track car was totalled, I wouldn't be able to go out and immediately buy another but I could accept that I had a £20k car, I now have a £5k pile of scrap metal and life would go on.
If my £200k track car was totalled, I would be unable to go out and immediately buy another. I would also be unable to pay off the sizeable money owing on it, would be in quite a spot of bother, probably have to sell my home to service the debt and probably never get back to where I was (financially).

As such, my threshold for track day insurance is circa £50k. Yours might be £100k, some people's might be £10k or £250k.

I really hope I'm not coming across as preaching. If I am, I apologise. Just thought it might be worth sharing thoughts, especially as there are 40 or so people expressing interest in this who might have not considered this topic.

So, out of interest Nick, have/will you be arranging cover for your Vantage for this event? If you've already done so, what was the premium? Will look into Competition Car Insurance too. Thanks for info.

No, I'm fine with all input. As you'll see from Page 1, I really didn't know what the insurance situation for track days was until I started looking into it for this event (as the last track day I did was 20 years ago!). You're right that it's really important that all participants know what the situation is and that there is no Third Party liability in any insurance so you either insure yourself or you're not insured, irrespective of "fault". Whilst I don't owe anyone a penny for my car and usually cycle to work, I would miss it hugely if you totalled it so please don't plough into me!

At the AML organised track days, they sometimes implement the rule of no overtaking, until the car ahead makes it clear that they are ready to be passed, by using the indicator.

Obviously helps to avoid unfortunate misunderstandings.

Yes, this works well, so long as everybody checks their mirrors on the straights. Indicate right, keep right, and following car passes you on the left, and vice-versa. Should then be incident free, (unless somebody overcooks it by themself!). eek

I'm not planning on trying to set any fastest laps. Just looking forward to being able to give it full throttle for more than 2-3 seconds at a time to hear what it sounds like.

I’ve done a few track days, not many. Sometimes I have insured (the £100 premium version) and sometimes not. Decisive, eh?

For me it’s the combination of the ol’ chances of going off and the consequences of doing so. For the first, consider who will be driving and their likely behaviour, along with the track and my familiarity with it - run-off, Armco, tyres and just space to cock it up if the world starts spinning should that happen for whatever reason. For the second it’s your motor, it’s value and repairability, acknowledging that £10-15k should cover most prangs in most cars but possibly not Astons...

When I entrusted my AMG to my son on his 21st at Brands, I insured. At Bedford I insured the first time out with the Cayman. Other times and other circuits I have not.

I should add at this point, and trying not to tempt fate, I have never yet claimed or had a coming together of any kind but did note that at Bedford there is about a mile of run off and nothing to hit. At Castle Coome with grass then Armco close by the consequences of an off could be disastrous.

Would I this time? Risks of nutters very low, track looks borderline ok-ish recognising the Indie wall and proximity of tyres. But I probably would cover the first £10-£15k even though I would be pussy footing around like a wheezy boy with a note from matron. Compared to the value of the car and how relaxed I would feel!
