Let's enjoy our driving now - the AUTO days are coming.

Slightly worrying, when the passenger (part time driver) says, the sytem cannot recognise Stop signs.
Will we still buy Aston Martins, when all this automated stuff takes over our passion ?
Insurance could be a killer before legislation.
Busy cities adopting driverless cars and all those cars with young driver/telematic boxes and these being extended.
As risks and premiums are reduced in these areas the companies will push their premiums up and up on driver operated vehicles without such contraptions.
Or mandatory telematics boxes to justify further cuts in police numbers/RTA pressures on NHS.

I still remember the revelation that was my Lotus Europa back in the mid-70s. The best way I can describe it is that it wasn't a situation where the car was quick and responsive, it was one in which I became quick and responsive. That car just took every aspect of my physical being and made it more brilliant. I can't remember many things that made me happier.
Today I feel that way about my DB9. It's not just beautiful and powerful...when I "wear" it I become better looking and more powerful.
I'm sad for those who only see cars as transportation. Special cars transform us.

As a brief aside from the main topic, I heard telematics boxes being discussed on a recent radio programme.
Their inaccuracy was being described. I know little about them, but do some involve downloading an app?
Two different apps were being used on the same journeys, with completely different results.
There were some cases of insurance being cancelled, based on doubtful telematic information. That cancellation then has to be disclosed on the next insurance proposal (with an obvious outcome).
Seems as though it might be something to avoid.

This depends upon how far ahead you are looking, but I doubt it will be too long before the public wont have a chance to buy their own car when they are fully autonomous and accepted. Slightly worrying, when the passenger (part time driver) says, the sytem cannot recognise Stop signs.

It won’t take the then World Government (ie the offspring of the UN) long to realise that by banning ownership of cars it will save resources and reap a whole host of other “benefits” to society.
Certainly the technology will then allow such political decisions to be made, once they’ve spoke to BRAKE and Mumsnet it won’t take them long to have the will to do so! No doubt the company directors who make up PH forums of the day won’t be consulted of course!
I read a very interesting article a few months ago which explained how automonous cars are a game changer, a real step change with massive impacts on society. One of those impacts was the idea of owning a car, with the prediction it will stop. Shared use on a needs basis will be the order of the day. No taxis or private hire cars, Uber etc, Why would you need those old concepts when you can simply call a car up to your location through your Apple Watch, or Apple Implant maybe!
Interesting one was the redundancy of car parks, especially in city centres, which will create space for other use.
I guess we won’t have too long to wait to find out the initial impacts on us all!
We're some way off being able to use fully autonomous cars, the main reason in the UK being the roads themselves. Most of the autopilot systems rely on presence of lining and road studs, which in the UK isn't always the case when you're not on the motorway. While VED revenue is being ring fenced for infrastructure spending from 2018, it will need a larger investment to get the road system into a shape that a Tesla (or AN Other) can drive you around without needing corrections when it cant decide where it is on the road.
As mentioned above, insurance is an issue - if you were to have an accident while in autopilot mode, it's a bit of a minefield as to who's at fault. You might claim the vehicle should have sorted out the situation, the manufacturer might claim the driver should have been able to read the situation and intervene accordingly.
One day, we might have no choice but drive around in the same fashion as the cars in Minority Report etc, but it's some way off (thankfully for car enthusiasts).

What we saw in the video, was clearly America.
I presume, but I don't know, that it was a normal customer car, and not a factory prototype.
Are UK Tesla customers being allowed the auto pilot software?
From your comment about lack of road markings, perhaps not.
As it works using road markings, could someone overpaint the markings one dark night, and create a false bend to try to take a car off the road? Surely not.
Must be a customer. Soporific driving experience too - after an hour or so on a motorway here it might be a beep beep wake up call before a incident on the smart motorway inside lane. Not good having to react to an emergency when the driver hardly ever drives.
Also the cars seemed to be programmed like sheep or lemmings.
Car parks do away with return journeys - they can't all disappear at night or drive long distances to huge recharging parks - unless the roads become car parks at night etc.

My daily driver is a Tesla MS, and yes autopilot is fully released in the UK. I am on firmware 8 (that’s an old video with a previous version of software)I presume, but I don't know, that it was a normal customer car, and not a factory prototype.

I think of the current autopilot as an enhanced cruise control. Works very well even on local streets, tracking the car in front or following road markings, but does not recognize stop lights, so you do have be involved. But still very relaxing while commuting, and safer. Has warned me several times even for problems a couple of cars ahead

And makes me look forward to the weekend DRIVE in the V12V.

As a side note, do you think fully autonomous cars will cause an increase in alcohol consumption and possibly addiction?
I know that if I didn't have to drive to work, take it in turns driving when out for a meal or not drinking more than a glass the night before I have to pick my daughter up, I would probably drink more and would the cause worth that mean you need to drink k even more when on a proper night out.
