Has anyone actually ordered one of these ?

https://shop.astonmartin.com/build-book/

I contacted them and asked whether the images were just stock or computer generated to match the VIN of the vehicle. The response I got was that they are NOT stock images, and that AML must have a archive of images for each car built (not sure how detailed etc).

I was told that if I ordered the book and the order was accepted (VIN was OK), then the images in the book that were supposed to be my car, would actually be the very car and would not be stock / edited etc.

Pretty good if so, however keen to know if anyone has actually done it ?

If I remember to ask, I'll do so when I'm at the factory tomorrow Ry

I am having one done for our AMR car that will be built later this month and have been told that the pictures will be of our car on the production line.

Are you talking about a car that has already been built or one you have on order? For a car already built it doesn’t make sense to me unless they automatically take pictures of all cars that are built and then can recover the images at a later date. If not built then it would make sense. confused

If I understand correctly, they have offered build books historically on a semi one off basis, typically via Q

That's effectively what we (you, me Graham) are having too, within the context of a slightly larger bespoke request which you are of course aware of ;-)

I spotted a few weeks ago that for new vantage, it has become an 'official option' on the price list

I assume that's connected to the latest email newsletter which came today, which links to a build book option online, which is here
https://shop.astonmartin.com/build-book/
I assume that's what's prompted Ry's post today ?

It would indeed appear that you can order the book for cars that have already been built so as you suggest, they must automatically take pictures of all cars at certain points on the line. How far that goes back I don't know, but the drop down list doesn't cover DB9 yet it does cover old & new vantage plus vanquish - I'm therefore guessing it goes back to say v approx early 2017 ?

I’m getting one ordered for my AMR. Not seen a sample yet, but I’m hoping it will have the car passing through more than one or two stations on the line.

It would be pretty amazing if they have been taking pictures of the builds for the archives. I'm certainly keen although I suspect the chances of them taking pictures 5 years ago (mine's a 2013) is pretty slim....!

If I were ordering a new car then it would be a given..!

Just ordered mine for a 2014 Vantage Roadster, they accepted my VIN number have taken my money on Paypal and supplied an order number. I shall be a bit sick if it is just a general picture of a roadster going through production for £456.50. I guess we will see.

It definitely won’t be stock generic pictures, that’s what I emailed and asked them today.

If they accept your order then the book will contain images of your car.

Guess it just depends how far back these images go.

Defo keen to see one though.

Chaps, thought I'd fill in some gaps on this:

The build books are fabulous. Split into three sections, it describes the history of Aston Martin (Part One), followed by the history, evolution and design process of your particular model, then finally 'Your Story', which is about 20 pages of your car being built. It describes the full build process, supplemented by images of your car captured by automatic digital cameras situated on the line.

The books can be ordered retrospectively, so don't necessarily need to be ordered with the car, but are only available within a certain VIN range. I think if you ordered one outside of the VIN range you'd get a full refund.

Were I buying new, it would be a must for me. Adds to the provenance of the car and is a really well put together publication, which you can order from the online shop@astonmartin.com.

Hope this helps a bit.

As Bins says not all VINS will be captured. Laura at AM told me the vast majority of cameras installed for this purpose were during 2017 so pre this much less likely to have any images.

Not sure why they don't just state that one the website then, makes it easier that way. I know they talk about VIN ranges but that means bugger all to us lot biggrin

I'll pull the trigger anyway, although i'm fully expecting to get a thanks but no thanks email.

I was very fortunate to have a complete set of hi-rez photos (approx 100) taken when 'my' DBS was built way back in '08, courtesy of the factory. Interestingly, I compiled them into my own hard cover book having sections including AM history, model design, launch and review, Bond connection, bespoke features, etc., and finally a description of the assembly process with photos...about 100 pages in all. I figured it would be a useful document when moving the car on. Glad the factory realized they could offer the same for any new car, regardless of who ordered/spec' it.

Sadly got the below message from AM today. My Vanquish S was a feb 17 build so the cameras must have been a late 17 thing frown

Thank you very much for your recent order of a build book to celebrate the build of your Vanquish. I have checked our records and unfortunately we do not have the imagery for your car that we would need in order to produce a book. This is because your car was built prior to the installation of the cameras in the factory.

As such, I have actioned a full refund, which will take approximately 2 working days to reach your account.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for any disappointment we may have caused.

Kind regards,

From speaking to a couple of people today whilst at the factory, they echo what Bincenzo says, which is that it's apparently a real quality hefty coffee table book

v approx q1/2 2017 is when the photos appear to go back to

Just had a refund from PayPal. I guess that means my DB11 was built when cameras weren’t installed? If so, I think it’s a bit poor that I get a refund before Aston Martin directly inform me (it’s been a couple of days now and still no word).
