Hi Guys

I have some slight paint bubbling on my DB9.

Some on the lip of the roof and some on the boot shut lip near the rear wing / rear windscreen.

Unfortunately it seems in the last few days I reckon, as I did not notice this a few weeks back, the paint has flaked.

Any idea how much I'd be talking to correct this and can anyone recommend anyone to do so near Nottingham. Wary who I take it to to sort.

Anyone else had this?

I’d suggest searching the forum. It’s a VERY well known and long standing frustration of many. Early DB9s very prone to it - and even more recent models (though not carbon fibre bodies). If you’re going to get them repaired, I’d give the car a thorough check over to make sure you get them all - door handles, wheel arches, A and C pillars, bonnet edges, inside door and bonnet edges etc. They’re easy enough for a good spray shop to remedy. Again, search the forum for recommendations on body shops near where you live.

That looks like it's been painted before too.

I had something similar along the roof gutter on my V8VS. I mentioned it to the dealer in Seattle during the service and after several weeks AM repaired it under goodwill. My car is a 2012 and this was done last year. The service book and body inspection stamps had all been completed by AM and my dealer said that definitely helped.
It’s worth a try.

Have you owned the car since new? If yes, ask your dealer to contact AML after sales care in Gaydon and head office will probably pay for it to be repaired.

Providing it's not been resprayed after a crash or similar.

Note - your dealer may or may not want to contact Gaydon. Be persistent and firm.

Me, I door-stepped Andy Palmer on Twitter and my car went back to Works Service for respray at AML's expense.

Tom, isn’t yours the 2004/5 DB9 with a 150k miles on it that you bought back in March? If it was me I would just get it sorted by a reputable local paint shop as I can’t see AML being that interested and wouldn’t waste my time trying to get them to correct it. Just my opinion of course.

As you are wary of who to take it too consider Chartwell's over in Derby.

http://www.chartwells.net

You'll get a first class job as they deal with top end stuff all the time, however they won't be the cheapest out there
but they will do a proper job.

Over to you…...thumbup.

Would that be a glass out job to get to all the damage?
Just thinking back to my 993 days where that kind of surface corrosion was just the tip of the iceberg, there was always much more hidden corrosion lurking beneath when the glass was removed?
If not would a smart repair be an option?

Yep common thing.

Mine is near side rear arch and drivers door under the handle.

If the car is older than 5 years you will have to pay up like I am.

I am taking mine to quarto coach works after summer

I know a really good paint guy in Chesterfield if that's not too far away from you. It shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred pounds.

Chartwells have a good reputation, but also a price to match.

The guy I know is called Mick Booth - tel 07971848432. He doesn't have a website and operates from a small unit in Bolsover near J29a of the M1. There's no affiliation nor vested interest but he's done loads of small repairs for me over the years including the dreaded bubbles on my DB9 door handles. I'm really picky when it comes to paint jobs as it's where I started my career 30 odd years ago and he's always done outstanding work for me. He doesn't do full resprays though only small repairs.

Many thanks

I have sent him a message and some pictures he is going to call me tomorrow

Mick got back to me

Reckons £2800 to do the repair and a few other bits of corrosion round the car and reckons he wants the window out to sort which I can understand where it is. Which is an absoloute pig this will get rid of corrosion completely and recommends this way of course

Or £660 to smart repair all bits of corrosion but is dubious how it will last etc

Did he offer you similar?

I expected 400-600 for the job I didn’t expect nearly 3 grand LOL!

Firstly, if your car has done 150k miles I would be looking at the smart repairs. It’s a driver not a piece of art.

But £660 buys a lot of smart repair, I would shop around. I’ve never paid more than £240 for tidying up a car (and that was a Range Rover with a few issues).

Are you sure he hasn't got the decimal point wrong? He did this for me a month ago (some dhead put a brick through my window and then bashed the rear spoiler) along with a huge scratch/small dent on my roof and door where my push bike fell out of the roof rack and hung from one wheel down the side of the car for about 1/4 mile until it was safe to stop. It cost £270.

He did the door handles on my DB9 about 4 years ago and it cost me about the same, perhaps because its corroding from between the panels it's a bigger job.

Exactly there’s no way I’m paying nearly three grand to sort it, I’d imagine he’s thinking I want perfection.

As per my initial post aimed at assisting you I mentioned Chartwell's wouldn't be the cheapest around.

If its turning into a game of top trumps, knock yourself out and enquire with Works Service.

That should be good for a laugh…..rolleyes

I appreciate the recommendation I do. Another quote from Crawfords for 2.5k

I think the issue is where the paint has bubbled right on the lip of the wing near windscreen what a huge pain. I will continue looking
