Waze and phone in AMV8 MY16 AMi II solutions?

I had a complete disaster with iphone 5s 16gig? being overloaded for storage as added a few more songs for the journey to Le Mans. As a result I had no music or waze for first 2 hours (even a separate ipod wasn't playing). Only had limited music when phone unplugged and no waze there or back.
So off to look at new phone options as old one has mostly disabled apps and no photo library now.
So for future trips whats the best option as waze needs phone plugged in and I have a different set of music on old iPod which I dont want to sync as the wonders of apple means I'd have to upload a load of CDs again.
New phone (apple) with enough storage and lightning connector should do Waze and Itunes (by bluetooth) at the same time - shouldn't it. It did work before trip but was a bit temperamental.

The option I used with Waze & music:
Put the phone in a holder on the windscreen, connect to a USB power pack & put that in the door pocket. The direction commands will come out of your speakers if you set it as 'Play as phone call in Waze'.
For music use bluetooth & change tracks/volume etc on your steering wheel controls. Not as good quality as a cable connection but at speed you'll be pushed to tell the difference.

Wonderfull route around/near railways and hosing estates near Expo centre to pop out just above main entrance and avoiding queues on way down. Sound only with about 30 to 40 direction changes in 5 minutes for a 4 car convoy

Glad it worked out Reg. You could always go for the AMiII to AMiIII upgrade which has Apple CarPlay & Android Auto (Waze & Google Maps will be available with iOS 12). Thats a lot! Also had a stuck screen and stuck in Sat Nav in last 5 miles to Calais (use that for visual aid and listen to Waze) was very hot on 4 hour blast back amd car a bit dusty inside too. 20 mins later all fine again
