Hi my 2009 VW Passat CC (2.0TDi 140) DSG has been having issues lately and I would really appreciate if anybody can advise or help me as this problem is getting worse and worse.

The car sometimes will start and then turn straight back off. It happens 4 or 5 times in a row and then finally starts, now this problems is happening more often and from happening once a week its now happening every time I try to start it. On some occasions it will not let me even try to start it and a warning message pops up with a flashing red steering wheel light with 'Steering Column Lock Defective'. I have been to a garage to diagnose the problem and it came up with immobiliser fault and steering column lock fault but for some reason he recommended me to firstly change the starter motor and that it could also be a problem with the flywheel?

Please can somebody recommend me a solution.

I am located in Bolton, Thanks.

Had something similar with a 2010 A4. Got to B+Q and the car didnt want to start to come home!

If it works the same on your Passat (which I assume it would) the message relates to the module where the key goes, which is an interface which passes a lot of the cars electronics, including the OBD port. Getting an accurate diagnosis using the laptop is hard, because if the module fails the OBD port doesnt work either. Its not necessarily related at all to the steering lock or the key.

I took mine to an Audi specialist, it spent about 2 weeks there and after chasing round half the wiring loom it was found to be a loose connection causing the issue.

Worst moment was ringing the mechanic up and his response was 'I've got your car in a million pieces on the ramp, we're chasing wires all over the place'. eek The bill wasnt excessive (£500 or so), but there was only about £20 worth of parts required and the rest was labour.

Sorry, not great news, but its an area of the car which needs specialist attention and could potentially be one of many many things, before you start replacing random parts.

Hi thanks for your response and information, I've got a 'specialist' coming to view the car on Tuesday and he is reputable in the area for replacing and reprogramming steering column lock. He has quoted £400 inc vat, so hopefully he can get to the bottom of it.
