I called Atlanta motor cars dealer to ask about a manual Vantage they have for sale. The salesperson Dan said the car needs an engine so it’s not for sale yet. Apparently during the test drive, the engine lost oil pressure and a connecting rod malfunction happened. There will be a new long block from Aston Martin installed on the vehicle. All of the accessories like the fan belt alternator will be from the old engine but it will be a completely new engine. I’ve never heard this before. I asked why they wouldn't just replace the rod instead of the entire engine (is there a bigger issue they aren't telling me?)
Would you guys be concerned?

This car is listed on the Aston Martin “preowned” website.

Which I thought means it comes with warranty. Dan says that it does not come with extra warranty. He said “certified” just means it’s gone thru inspection by AM technicians and doesn’t mean it comes with extra warranty. Says you may have to buy warranty. The guys here sound kind of junior.

A bit concerned about 6 previous owners. That seems like a lot of owners.

I assume when the rod malfunctioned it popped through the block!

Is that something that can be replicated easily or did the guy have to do something really wrong during the test drive?

Hmm its either on a 'timeless' warranty or it isnt, I would.personally walk away from this one.

These engines are not renowned for rodding themselves!!

If the engine is replaced by AM, I guess that’s kind of starting new. I’m more concerned as to how rod malfunction happened but you stated that it’s not normal. 6 previous owners is questionable unless they took care of the car.

You clearly have some doubts about this car.

If your intention is to buy a Vantage, then keep long-term, I would pass on this car and be patient for one to appear which gives you more confidence.

The dealers comments seem very vague. A long block for instance. Buyers would want a complete new engine, built in Cologne, not a new block assembled by someone fitting parts from the damaged engine.

Numerous owners is not unusual for expensive cars, particularly during the first few years, but with the next being number seven, that is perhaps too many and off putting for both you and future buyers.

They said it would be a complete new engine.

Mates Vantage threw a rod...I know as I held the mangled big end bolt that was retrieved from the roadside!

The other way of looking at it is if the repair job is done properly then you don't have to worry about this extremely rare issue.

A long motor is a complete remanufactured engine. They no longer come complete with the ancillary parts ie manifold alternator brackets and wiring harness etc, these need to be transferred off the old motor.

So that means technically it is not a brand new engine like the associate was telling me? You're saying that a new long block is basically a remanufactured piece of the engine that is installed ontop of the old engine? Not sure if that's a good thing...

No. Engines go back on an exchange basis. They are then fully rebuilt. Quite sure this is common practice with all manufacturers.

Apparently, there has been 2 other owners of 2009 and 2010 v8v that have had this issue with their engine and oil starvation, causing the engine to blow. Is there anyone else on this forum that has heard or had this engine issue? I'm getting concerned and might just pass and look for a newer model.
