Walk away from this one?
Discussion
I now have the money for my first Aston. One of the cars I'm looking at was originally registered in Jersey until 2014 (now back in UK) and had a new engine fitted in 2016 (8,000 miles now done on the new engine). It is a 2009 DB9, 470bhp, 24k and being sold by an Independent dealer.
Is this a "walk away from it" Aston, or shouldn't these details worry me?
I appreciate any responses.

I’m also looking at a v8 vantage. Apparently during one of the test drives, they blew a rod so AM is putting in a new long block. Some friends told me that technically it’s a new engine so it is actually a good thing while someone said said it’s a remanufactured part of the engine so walk away. I have no clue.

Early DB9's had an oiling issue. Later 470bhp engine had a factory fix, so worth looking into more, as you have a better engine.
As Mark rightly says above, so I think you're actually better off and personally see it as a bonus. Especially if it was done under warranty at an Aston Martin dealer. The difference in mileage is actually very small so it's not like other components will be worn out pro rata. If it's a nice car I wouldn't be put off.Banner said:

For the sake of forum Chinese whispers not turning (incorrectly) into folklore, can someone expand exactly what “oiling issue is / means”?Because the franchised network go-to rectification method when a car is covered by a warranty is “box changing”, an engine will be removed and replaced with a remanufactured lump for the simplest of reasons (tappet shims on V8 or hydraulic lifters on V12 good examples), where outside of warranty and at independent, where independents offer more solutions other than “box changing”, the engine would have been robustly repaired and the engine number would match the V5.
There are a number of forum members who’s cars have had their engine swapped, pointlessly, for the box changing reason. Those cars are still mint (concerns about remanufactured engines aside), absolutely nothing wrong with those cars and I’d buy them off a phone call conversation.
It’s all about the car in front of you at that moment in time. If the engine is within service / fit / healthy, by-and-largely that’s all that counts. If in doubt - pre inspection it out!

as I understand it, it was more a case of AM installing a shorter dipstick (part no G4E-6750-AC) so more oil was in the engine and also (poss at a later date) revising the sensor to warn of low oil level.Mike you probably know the sensor system update ref - SA-03-0175???
So, yes my reply was lazy, not an oiling issue per se, but if you have a new engine from AM, not a bad thing apart from non matching numbers

Wise words and an awful lot more helpful to the buyer and seller of the said vehicle than the 'just walk away' comments.

I was thinking about when it comes to reselling it (difficulty and value).
All things considered I'm leaving this alone.
Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

I know an extremely nice DB9 Volante newly advertised on this very website...!
It’s only done 20,302 miles. The number plate is Y2 FUN!
Wink wink!
