ferrari or mclaren
Discussion
Having recently gone to a 650s spider I am biased and still a bit in the honeymoon phase.
My observations on the McL:
-Amazing performance - lots of controllable power oversteer - great steering feel and turn-in
-clever suspension increases range of usability on poor roads where the others feel twitchy and unwieldy
-excellent forward visibility again makes it far more usable on challenging roads
-lightweight carbon tub - Lotus-like agility
-may not yet have the Italian cachet but all those Youtube videos of Mclarens pulling away from the Italians seem to have caught on at least with the younger crowd. Certainly more of a driver's car than a poseur.
-c'mon it has an air-brake!
As with all such cars, make sure you include depreciation and maintenance in your thinking (Was pretty significant on my V12V to be honest). Sweet spot likely a 3 year old car (with any initial niggles resolved) with extended warranty/service deal. NE dealers seemed quite willing to work with you.

Depends on why you are buying. If you don’t care about depreciation then buy the car you like most.
If depreciation worries you buy a Ferrari not a McLaren, or better still some sort of GT3 911.
Everything already said about McLaren costs is true having researched recently myself.
Personally if you don’t care about costs too much I’d up the budget a smidge and get a 650s, or a bit further and get a 458. Both are excellent, very different from each other.

I've driven a 650s and a 570s and as driving experiences McLarens are a great, but everyone I know or have spoken to who has owned one has a story about reliability and/or depreciation and it would put me off a purchase. Literally before clicking on my pistonheads bookmark I was watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbXT7rrLU0o

Nice that, really nice and all the better for not being red IMHO.
thank you, my requirements were not red or yellow (I know it's the classic colours, just too bright for me), Berlinetta, manual, carbon seats and challenge grill. This one ticked the lot, so I was really pleased I was able to snap it up. Upperworks said:

I miss my 355 sooooo much. Challenge Grill rare on a manual PantsFire said:

Very old news about the first “high” production model in a country that has been conditioned to expect British cars to be unreliable. Just to give an example of how things have changed, regarding the battery, all the newer cars come with conditioners and a convenient boot plug location with clear instructions to plug in if not used for a while, as well as indication on the dash of how much battery is left. I use the car only in the weekends, and I haven’t seen it drop below 100% so I haven’t bothered to plug in.
And if I believe the sales numbers US sales are growing the strongest.
