My new to me DB9 Auto seems to be very fierce when moving from rest. The car starts fine and soon idled at 750 rpm but releasing the foot brake results in a dramatic surge forward ( without any throttle input ) almost uncontrollably. I have found the only way to advance safely appears to be by a light partial easing of the brake until on the open road.

I wondered if anyone else has experienced this or maybe “ they all do that sir”.

Comments much appreciated.

I can say that mine (DB9.2) doesn't do that in normal mode. It can be quite fierce in sport mode especially if you're 'going for a gap' and can bang your passenger's head quite firmly against the headrest if they're not anticipating it. It's especially noticeable if your DD is a turbo diesel as the pickup is instant. However if you're having to hold it on the brake I'd say something is amiss.

Agree doesn’t sound right. My 2005 DB9 was very aggressive on the initial throttle and took some getting used to but I don’t recall any problems on just releasing the brake. They changed the throttle mapping in later models to fix the issue.

Sounds like too much drag through the torque converter. Is it filled with the correct oil?

Thank you very much for the responses, seems like I have an issue then!

Appreciate the comment re transmission oil, that sounds like a real possibility. I have only just got the car and am told it has lots of service history but am still waiting for the dealer to provide this. Consequently, I am unable to see when, if ever the gearbox has seen any service action!

Probably be a good idea to change the oil anyway.

David,

Initial Torque is high but only from throttle application.

I’m also in Somerset if you want to compare it to mine.

Thanks for the offer Sean, I’d like to take you up on that, if we can arrange something. Whereabouts are you in Somerset, I live about 5 miles from Junction 25 ( Taunton) M5 ?

Cheers, David.

Mine's like that. but only when you accelerate. Releasing the brake with no throttle just lets it creep forward like any other automatic. It's only if you're a bit enthusiastic pulling away that you really notice it.

750rpm sounds a little on the high speed for idle, maybe that is causing too much bite on the torque converter.

I have found with mine that the best procedure is start it up with foot on brake (mandatory to start it anyway), handbrake off, keep foot on brake and engage gear, when it is cold, it can sometimes make a slight transmission clunk when you put it into gear. It doesn't lurch forward though.

is this only when cold or all the time?

If you have only just purchased it - I assume it comes with a warranty - I would get it back ASAP.
