I've only driven two AMG cars briefly (CLK55 and CLS63) so I can't really comment on them, but I'm more impressed by BMW's 5.0L M5/M6 engine actually. Thats the ideal goal IMO biggrin You gotta love fast revving, high red-line engines!
What do they redline at out of interest?

What he said biggrin

To be honest, I'm not sure if it will actually drink significantly more fuel. Both the AMV8 and the M6 have similar mpg figures I believe. The DFI and double VANOS probably helps as well smile

While I agree that the M5/M6 engine is a great one, it isn't right for an Aston IMO, it lacks mid-range & is a high rev screamer. Astons really suit a grunty effortless mid-range combined with a hard hitting top end, the silky charismatic V12 & beefy aggressive V8's are spot on, they just lack a little on the performance front when compared to top end AMG's/BM's/Pork.

The 09MY changes have gone a long way towards fixing this, but I suppose we are debating "where do we go from here." Direct injection modifications would add circa 30bhp to the current engines, so could cover the next evolution along with improved fuel economy which is currently DIRE!!!

Off the shelf for the AMV8 could be the AMG's, latest Corvette, Jags new 5 litre, maybe even a supercharger option now the technology is more controllable! For the DB9 its harder, their is less of a choice, Mercs V12, VW's W12, or simply a 6.5 litre version of the current engine.

Thats true. Pity AMG engines don't give me that same kind of kick as some other engines. Possibly due to their relatively lower redline as well I suppose. I think, if AM can get the tech, they really only need to work on the cylinder heads. 4.7L is enough if its well tuned I think, but they need newer technology in the heads (VVT, DFI, ITV), and possibly also FI in a form of a supercharger. Just a mild boost and all that tech would easily bump it over 500hp biggrin

Jag's 5L is a good base if they can get their hands on it. GM's LS engines I'm not so sure. It's so unrefined and old-tech compared to the newer engines. Only 6.5K redline and even with a supercharger it only gets 100hp/L. nono

Agreed with Grant.. actually the current 4.7 V8 and the V12 fit the Aston character perfectly! To those who haven't experienced the new 4.7 over the 4.3, it is quite a difference, bringing back that proper low down Aston shunt like the V12 has.
