Sub 20k DB7

Looking to change my clk for another coupe. Considering an xkr when fantasy mode kicked in and i started looking at DBs in the classified's. How likely is one of these to ruin me ? Are there many indies around to keep things sensible? Apologies for newbie questions.

Not that many newbies, but they can be looked after be a competent owner.

The 6 cylinder cars are becomming a bid of a cinderella now- the vantage is so much better that people will always buy that, driving ther 6 cylinder values down further. But you can buy a good one and it will be very good indeed. Just do your homework (and dont buy a very early one- there was lots of faults with these cars)

I took a test drive in a 6-cyl and whilst the ride was fine I was underwhelmed by the performance. So I thought maybe I'd save up more and try the Vantage version for the extra power and noise.

Then just as I thought that was a good thing to do, someone told me how much fuel it uses. Now I'm not an eco-freak, but something in the 15mpg area is rather a stumbling block...

15 mpg ?????? You must be driving with your foot fully planted in the carpet all the time. Lady Georgie and I did 2435 miles touring southern France last June and we averaged around 23 mpg. Granted a lot of that was touring and enjoying the weather and the countryside but fuel consumption shouldn't put you off.
A full complete dealer service record is a must and there are some good low mileage Vantages around. Also check the front tyres carefully - the tracking is easily upset resulting in badly worn inner edges.
Go for it, you won't regret it, the Aston experience rises above simple financial matters. In life you only regret the things you didn't do

I've had my five owner, 67000 mile Vantage for 8 months now and get between 14 and 19 mpg. I admit that I do 'use it'. Have spent a few thousand over purchase cost getting it right for me. Build quality....mmm, depends what you're used to, I came from Mercs, so there were some surprises, like a 100k car that's not undersealed out of the factory. Mine now carries about 20lbs of Waxoyl in all the practical places underneath. It lives outside and I use it everyday, so far it's bloody marvellous.

Can feel a bit crude until everything's freed up and warm from a cold start. The leather is very soft and marks/scuffs quite easily.

Whinging aside though:



It is worth the hassle.

Just what do you expect from an Aston Martin for heavens sake!? Sounds like you should be looking for a nice sensible diesel!!

The fuel costs shouldn't be a concern. If they are, then you should really be asking if you can afford to run a DB7. The danger with cars like this is that when they become cheap to buy, they do not automatically become cheap to run. I'm not suggesting that it will break the bank, but you do need to go in to it with your eyes wide open. Look at the cost of those occassional bits we all have to face. If you can't stomach the fuel consumption, how would you feel paying out £1500 for replacing the coil packs?

Well we're not talking practicality here, it's just a case of where you draw the line: 20mpg - 15mpg - 10mpg - 5mpg? But it would be a second car, so very low miles to cover, and Gordy does need my money...

I'm currently considering ditching the Ferrari, TVR and Beemer and getting a DB7 Vantage as my only car. Given that I only average 18mpg in the 540 it doesn't seem that unreasonable a proposition... does it?

I find, unlike other cars I've had, that it doesn't get old, you know, that 'It's my Aston' feeling.

you don't need to upgrade sir ....the 7 Vantage is in many ways a beeter looking car than the 9 IMO......I had an Aston Racing green 7 Vantage about 4 years ago, but it had to go during my divorce......made me cry apart from the 3k profit I made on it
