Good evening All

I've removed the plastic front number plate from my V8V and want to stick the number plate to the bumper instead but am having some trouble. I'd rather not screw it on as that spoils the lines but the sticky pads I've tried don’t hold it in place for more than a few days (yes I have cleaned and prepped the area). It seems to be the curvature that causes the problem.

So, I wondered what tips and advice those of you that aren’t using the plastic plate holder had or what method/products you are using to solve this problem?

I look forward to your thoughts (apart from to put back the holder lol).

Many thanks.

Jason

Mine are velcro'd on. You'd never know, but they are also recessed.

You've either not done this properly, or are using crap sticky pads.

Mine's been stuck on this way for 3.5yrs and never come off once.

im using black heavy duty velcro ...have been for nearly 4 years on this car ...its what I had to hand at the time

get some different pads (halfords sell number plate pads for a couple of quid)

make sure you clean the area with something like isopropynol (degreaser) ...dont wax n polish then stick on

Thanks guys.

I have been using the heavy duty black pads from Halfords and been careful to prep the area but it hasn't worked.

I did consider the "no more nails" option and actually have the tape already but worried that it may stick too well lol. I regularly change my number plate and not sure it will be possible to get it off as its so good at its job. So this morning I've tried the velcro route using black heavy duty stuff so fingers crossed.

Thanks as always for your advice.

Can you take a photo of the rear of your plate with the pads attached as you've tried it?

And also where you're trying to stick the plate?

Finally, of the plate itself (including its thickness?

Might give some clues.

I used the Halfords pads, and it's stuck tight. So there must be something wrong with your application.

There's no way I'd use No More Nails! You will need to remove it at some point!

WD 40 dissolves the "no more nails" tape in about 5 mins and you can just pull the number plate off, so no real worries

I bought a thin number plate holder, something like this, which screwed to the existing holes in the bumper and gave a nice finish. The screws are low profile and hidden and the plate itself stayed put with the supplied sticky tape.

There are also thin holders which clip around the plate.

IIRC people were promoting the use of a Jag X type front plate holder as a neater mount than the AM one on V8Vs on a (very) previous thread on here.

That is just the method I used. My local dealer had a couple of plate holders (possibly from an Audi?) in to which the plate just clips.

Nail gun is better as it will grip on the oil cooler behind.

You could put a hole each end of the plate and tie it on with string?

Or...buy a small child and get them to sit on the grille lip and hold the plate with one hand and the grille with another (I suspect our Jag brethren have it easier here, as the leaping cat gives something better to hold onto).

What about SuperGlue?

Hey Guys,

Here is an update for you........................HD Velcro was the answer!

I guess its just a case now of waiting to see how long it takes for the heat of the engine to melt the adhesive at the front and for the exhaust to do the same to the rear lol.

Many thanks for all your input. Its much appreciated as always.

It will be fine wink
I've used HD Velcro on my last 6 cars over the last 11 years and never had a problem.
Almost the opposite, try getting them off without injuring yourself or pulling the bumper off smile
