Some of the guys on the CRX-UK forum did a bit of extensive research into jap import insurance a while back and knocked out quite a comprehensive list.

Have a look here

Hope this helps

I don't think he meant a single, under 30s, foreign male with implants would cover you.

I'm insures with A-Plan on my RX-7. All mods declared, not garaged (but secure parking) in SE London. It's not cheap but came down this year by £370 to a piffling 1400!!! They were the cheapest bona-fide quote I could find.

Problem with the likes of direct line and tescos are the insurance of any mods. Most jap imports will have a few (wheels as minimum) and the mainstream insurers dont' really know what to do with them. So it's either a premium hike or the small print excludes them. You ony find out about the problem come claim time!

The companies who cater for specialist imports may cost you an extra 50 quid but you will be properly covered.

Hah!

I wish. Try 21... In December.

I have an extremely insurance friendly postcode, you see. But I'm not sure how far that will carry me with a Rex!

Yeah, I thought a reality check would be needed when I got the MR2 as well, but it worked out alright.

Thing is, whilst I could get insured if I wanted to, I could really do with another two years NCB. And I'd have to keep my license clean.

It's just a question of do I really want to pay an absolute sh*t load for insurance so I can drive a bloody ballistic car... or not.

Might go back to looking at ITRs just in the interest of saving some cash, and because they're a middle-ish ground between the '2 and an RX7 in terms of outright speed... But I'd have to re-learn the FWD driving style.

Grab an autotrader/local rag, look in PX to clear, by a ultra high milage diesel repwagon (motorway miles) for £100, insure it fully comp (so to drive other cars), but Rex, get mum to insure it fully comp. You can now legaly drive a grp 20 car for peanuts...

That thought had crossed my mind too (although I bet it constitutes fraud, technically).

Only obstacle there is I don't think the old man would like having a shed sitting in the driveway.

33!

I'm in a bad postcode (SE4) but have 5 years NCB and live in a gated development. If I could fit the car in my garage and actually get out of the doors it'd be about a grand less. I'm on a 6k miles per year too.

FDs aren't cheap to insure as people have a habit of writing them off far too frequently - usually 1st month of ownership from what I see on the boards. Pretty sure it's because they're cheap(ish) to buy so people with no clue get them - move from fwd cars and stack it 1st time it rains.

I learned my lesson 1st time it rained comig off a roundabout backwards (it was all going fine until the 'apex'!) and was lucky in that I didn't hit anything hard (came to a stop against the kerb with a little bump).

This is a good solution & have used it myself, without any probs.Of course your mum will have to be registered owner of your beloved Rex for this, but if you're a registered 'named driver' should not be a fraud prob.
Unfortunately age & NCB seem to be the major ca$h factor.

Don't forget that when you're driving another car on your own FC insurance that you're only driving with 3rd party cover!!! Makes it legal but makes it expensive if you punt it into a barrier even if the damage is just cosmetic.
