Evo X Auto or Manual?
Discussion
If you have experienced a DSG, PDK or even the likes of the 8-speed ZF box then you will find the EVOs auto box to be a bit behind the rest in terms of refinement. I was going to buy an EVO X 330 and so tried a few in both manual and auto. The first auto I drove filled me with little confidence when leaving a 40 limit that changed to a 60 limit and with about 80% throttle it tried to shift into first (at near 50) resulting in the car standing on its nose, lots of horrible noise, the engine management light coming on and the car going into limp home mode. It may have been a one off, but to have such an issue during a short test drive didn't exactly instil confidence in the product.
The manual is a pretty unpleasant box and to be honest I've experienced nicer boxes on sub £10k super minis. It's nowhere near as good as the EVO boxes of old.
Have you driven one yet by the way? I ended up buying a different car instead as having had my heart set on the X I found it was nowhere near as good as I'd hoped. A friend has a manual X 360 and it is the most boring way of going quickly I can think of. Totally uninspiring drive and pretty characterless with a crap sounding engine that due to gearing drones unpleasantly above about 45mph - I don't mind loud cars one bit, but the X sounds so dull it just does my head in.
Anyway, I didn't mean to start an anti EVO ramble, but if I was you I'd buy an IX which is a much nicer car, albeit a bit less everyday use refined. Or try an Impreza. I like both and have no read bias towards the Scooby, despite owning an Impreza (about to be sold most likely).
But go and drive both and decide what you want (or don't) is my advice. Everything I've said is just opinion but ask you asked I'd say both boxes are crap though the auto at least has 6 ratios which shuts up the drone a little at motorway speed.
Let us know how you get on.

I chose a 330 SST after driving the 300 SST and a 360 manual.
I didn't like only having a 5 speed box, but there was nothing particularly wrong with it (other than drony revs)
The SST was my first foray into double clutch and sold me on it. In Sport auto it was blindingly good around tight roads imo and when wanting to have a play with other cars that's what I used.
I never really played in Super Sport mode though as Sport was quick enough and I usually just tickled the gears by hand for normal driving.

Thank you for all your advice. after driving both I found that the Auto suited me fine especially because there were very little or none in manual in the spec I was after. I am now the owner of a Evo X FQ330 SST. And I must what a machine. Absolutely amazing pace on it and corner ability. Looks amazing in black too. Once again thanks for your help.
TBH the best thing to do is get a test drive. My old evo was manual and I ran (still do) an SMG2 equipped M3. I know everyone bangs on about involvement on manuals but personally, for a really good blast, I would take a paddle equipped car every time. Kinda makes you feel like a racing driver never having to take your hands off the wheel and regardless of what people say, it will change a lot quicker than you'll ever be able too. You're still involved as it's you deciding which gear and when.
