You could get an R34 that could keep up with a stock R35 in a straight line for £40k but not in the corners!
Could you? R35 has 0-60 in 2.8s. I highly doubt you're getting that out of an R34 without completely molesting it and ruining what was once great. And even then, I doubt it. BHP is not everything, it's the go-to stat of the car ignoramus.

By all accounts the R34 is a fantastic car. but let's not pretend that it competes with the 35 in any technical way. It is to the 35 as the E36 is to the E92.

The mystique of the R34 will be clung to by people who grew up playing Gran Turismo and there's nothing we can do about it. Funnily enough its popularity and price-rise has coincided with many of my generation reaching their mid 30s - just the sort of age where a a job and savings would allow you to buy your dream car from your childhood. Frankly, I'd happily have either. The running costs of the R35 do scare me off, but the purchase price of the R34 is out of control. And many people are also not getting what they're asking for one, so I expect the bubble to burst.

All these people saying how they'd "definitely" want one over the other - I doubt you have driven both. I certainly haven't, only the R35, and it is a fantastic machine. As always, the rarer and lesser known will always win over the credulous compared to the "mainstream".

The price rise of the R34 has most definitely coincided with the hike of the yen in comparison to the pound in recent years, I doubt people growing up has had anything to do with it.

As well as how the R32 has shot up in price since being eligible for import to the US, next the R33 will shoot up in price and in 8-10 years the R34 will shoot up in price once more.

Unfortunately the dream car R34 is becoming less and less attainable for some smile

The two event have coincided (you do know the meaning of coincidence right?) Whether you want to infer a causal relationship is up to you. It'll be a combination of both; the pound is weak but actual Japanese prices have also increased.

I'd happily have either car. People who molest and over-mod R34s are criminal. We should also understand that both cars are icons to their respective generations.

I would put money on a mines R34 being able to compete with a stock R35.

Having driven both I'd say the R34 is the more engaging IMO the R35 is more refined but the RB26 lump is so enjoyable with around 450bhp, also due to the limited numbers of R34's they'll also hold their money better.

I personally think as the R35 gets older it'll keep losing as the shear complexity of the car will scare some potential buyers.

I have been in and out of both cars for a while now, they are very different. I am currently selling my quite hardcore 34 as I just don't use it enough, I may well get into a new GTR and keep it standard, maybe I am getting old lol.

This is mine

It is killing me though selling a car I know is appreciated in value and is so cheap to maintain to but a GTR that costs a lot to run and will drop in value

I'm thinking of selling my R35 but just can't do it, it's a boring cliche but what the hell do you buy for the same value (true of almost any value or year of R35)

Forgetting anything of similar performance, anything else that I actually love but has NOWHERE near the performance has now appreciated out of reach, not just out of reach but unjustifyable too (for example a 993 C2S, Ferrari 550, 996 GT3)

At a local monthly car meet around 30-40 cars of all types usually turn up, I think there have been around 10 R35s a couple of times. That's enough reason for me to prefer the R34.

I swapped my R35 for a V8S F-Type. Completely difference experience, more TVR like but with modern technology. Love the pops and bangs from the exhaust. More comfortable than the GTR but more than enough speed for the road. Drive one in sport/dynamic mode (it's a bit leisurely otherwise) and make sure the exhaust is switched to loud, and I guarantee you will smile smile

I really like the F Type, particularly the V8, I think it looks and sounds fantastic!

Only thing is, Ideally I`d like something of equal value or maybe less and hopefully depreciation neutral(ish)

Not asking much am I, that` s why I still have mine

The best F-Types are bought 2-3 years old, low mileage with a Jag warranty. They lose a lot in value over this time because they are over priced at new. Take a look on AT you may be pleasantly surprised smile
