My family's 17 yr old Celica may need to be scrapped (hope not) -its a great little car with only 60k on the clock.)

I need some advice from any Celica owners please :

It looks like the cooling system has been pressurised by one of the cylinders , possibly caused by a blown head gasket - or warped head (?)

Pressure test on all cylinders shows a consistent 7.5 - 8 bar (c. 110 - 120 psi ).

I've been quoted "about" 8 hours labour !! to remove the head , have a look and replace gasket (IF its the gasket ).

How long should it take to do this sort of work (Am I being quoted excessive labour hours ? ) - and what other problems may be lurking apart from the gasket ?

We would ideally like to keep the car for sentimental reasons - but not if it''l cost the thick end of £1k to fix the car.

Many Thanks

I am well out of date with Celica costs, but that seem excessive. Who is giving you the quote? Indy specialist or an official Toyota shop?

The quote is from a small indy in my mums village in South Bucks (its her car, was my dads ) - she is rather too trusting so I went along to ask the garage a few Q's - I just thought 8 hours seemed a lot for the job , .........plus a fair degree of "not totally sure sure what the problem is" type of comments .... which to me (cynical) translates as "the bill will be huge cos there will be stuff to charge you for that I don't know yet )

I've been using a Garage called Volks-tec in Chalfont St Giles. They have given me good free advice before now and dont appear to be ripping me off.

If you want their number message me through my profile

That'll be a gen 4 then?

Potentially cheaper to buy a new engine and drop it in....

There used to be some adverts in the paper for some South London based operation that claimed they would fit a reconditioned engine for, I think, five or six hundred quid, and it included some warranty period too. Looked rather too good to believe.
