First of all I'll tell you what I'm doing in here (on unfamiliar territory away from the self-congratulation of the TVR forums - did I say that? ).

There's a chap at work who I often chat to in the kitchen. He's an ex biker (lost an arm in an accident) and has been looking for an MR2. Anyway, this morning there was only me and him in at 7.00am and he came across with a pic - he's bought a 1995 M plate - he was on top of the world, and it looks great from the photo. But talk about hitting someone with a sh1tty stick; we were half way through the discussion about getting insurance on a second car and he got a call on his mobile to say that his father had just died.

So, to get to the point, I'd quite like to do something nice for him but not too gushy and I thought it might be good to help him out with some insurers and just leave a list of names and numbers on his desk. I've done a search on JapChat and Bell Direct seem to be pretty well thought of. I thought of ClassicLine if the car's turned 10 years old, and Insurance Jon from here. Any other suggestions please? I'm reckoning that he's probably early 40s and it'll be kept on the road.

Also, do any of the specialists do discounts if you're a club member, like Mannings do for the TVR club?

Hope you can help.

If I remember correctly Dorset Insurance do the MR2 owners club scheme. Used to be very good, but some reports of them getting a bit shirty now.

I don't think it is, didn't get a long time to talk before he had to go.

Anyway, you'd better get back to the world of "aren't we great" before you are seen here mixing with the enemy

Cheeky sod! That's the last time I side with you in the 'enemy camp!'.

Besides, I have my own particular brand of 'greatness' which others can only aspire to

Try Admiral too.

They've been good for me quite a few times, on some pretty mad vehicles (Supras etc).

Stop baiting me Gazboy, I'm not giving you any ammunition!

Back to the import question - I don't know enough about them to guess, but you will. It's definitely a '95M and will be an automatic. Would that identify it as being in one camp or the other, or could it be either imported or UK at that age?

Thanks for the tips though gents - I'll do him a note.

That's because NU have become a pain in the butt regarding modifications.

Dorset have just rehomed me with Chaucer, and they couldn't give a monkeys what I do to the car.

Give Dave or Sarah a ring on 01202302888. Tell them James sent you. They might work something out.

GSI were cheap as well when I did the ringaround about a month ago. 01933411888

Having recently tried a few websites for insurance for my 26 year old wife on a Civic Type R with 8 years NCB, Tesco were cheapest and the following were rubbish:

Admiral
Direct Line
Norwich Union
Budget

yet Budget were cheapest for her Astra so it depends on the car.

Thanks all . Really helpful - he's on the phone as I type this

Gazboy - it is an import (learn something new every day!). With any luck I'll get to see it in the next couple of weeks. Then I'll introduce him here.

Fluxy just quoted us for the Civic Type R at £633 which beats Tesco's £705 (itself a good quote) hands down.
