New-ish driver here. Wondering if anyone can help. I'm having an intermittent problem with my Yaris (2009, 1.33l, petrol). A couple of weeks ago, when pulling out at a roundabout, the car just crawled forward at less than walking pace. I initially thought I might have accidentally gone into third instead of first, so I re-set the gear, but this had no effect. The speed just slowly increased until it was driving normally.

It's done it again a couple of times since - luckily in traffic queues, not at junctions. When it happens the revs only get up to about 1000 and it judders a little.

Any ideas what it might be?

Check to see how clean the throttle body is - whip the inlet pipes of and check its not gummed up
Has it got any warning lights on?

Hi - Thanks for the reply. No, there was no warning light.
Feeling a bit nervous about messing with stuff under the hood! Is the throttle body inlet pipe the one labelled 'R' in the pic?

no that looks like a rad hose so leave that be - on yours it will be at the back of the engine next to the air box on the right hand side with the plastic cover removed:

the throttle body looks like this - the butterfly valve inside it can get filthy dirty with oil vapour - you can pop your fingers in there and gently open the butterfly and clean both sides of it with some wd40 and scotchbrite or similar - pay particular attention to the edges. You can use carb cleaner instead I guess but I've always prefered WD40 or similar.

Its a shame its a touch awkward to get to on yours

not much help but I had something very similar on my wifes 1.0 Yaris. I spent quite a lot of time on it, including cleaning the throttle body and idle air control, changed the plugs, the knock sensor, changed the cam position sensor (was leaking) and changed then MAF sensor. Also took it to 2 garages (one toyota specialist and one general).

None of that fixed it so we sold it.......

All I did manage to determine was that, when it was playing up, an OBDII reader showed it was massively retarding the ignition. This certainly explains the symptoms (ie complete lack of power) but didn't explain why.

morgrp thanks for the info - I guess this is it: http://i.imgur.com/YVlgssR.jpg

I was hoping I'd just be able to pull the tube out but it looks like I'd need to remove the whole contraption with the L bend somehow. I loosened the clamp but it wouldn't budge as it was. We're getting beyond my capabilities here so I think I'll take it to a garage, it's a shame it's such an awkward setup. Thanks so much for your help though.

brman interesting that someone else has had similar. I wish it had a better outcome.
