Anyone else see this on ebay? I won't lie, I was vastly cheered up to see someone pushing the boundaries with the price, but I would be, as I've got an almost mint one tucked away, however I'm not blind to the realities. The listing has either ended or the car sold, I suspect the former. As much as I'd like to see the values go up, I'd be amazed if they started to take hold the way 205 GTIs or RS Turbos have recently.

Haven't seen it but I doubt MK1 MR2 are yet to reach the heights of the AE86 price wise

Neither. It's a classified ad, not a time limited auction.
The change was merely a price revision - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemRev...

The asking price is a bit optimisitic but an unmolested mint condition Mk1 is a rarity.
Many have succumbed to the dreaded tin worm.

It will probably only appeal to a collector and probably one in Europe at that.
Nearly all the MR2s I know of which have got close to decent money have left our shores.
It's a combination of recognising value* and the Euro/GBP exchange rate.

 * Too many Brits expect to get everything at a bargain basement figure.

Hmm, there's hope for mine yet then. I haven't tried to sell it, but was recently offered twice what I paid for it 16 months ago. I declined, as I reckon another grand or so will have it as good as is reasonably possible to get it, and I'd like to use it for a while in that condition. It's already in very nice nick, as you say, a rarity now.
