My daughters 06 Swift has done just over 80000 miles, there’s a lot of noise I presume from the clutch release bearing which goes quiet when you press the clutch peddle and the gear change is sometimes a bit baulky and difficult. Is it time for a new clutch?.

Sounds like it could well be time for a new clutch. Is there any difficulty in selecting reverse as well? There is a simple test (spin down test) which also helps determine if the clutch is ending it's useful life; with the engine running and in neutral, push the clutch in and immediatly select reverse. If it is difficult to engage, repeat the test but wait a moment after putting the clutch in to try and select reverse. Usually, the reverse gear dosnt have a synchronising gear, and if there is drag on the clutch from worn parts then the shafts will need to stop before it can be engaged.

This is how I knew my clutch on my honda civic needed replacing - it was getting worse and worse selecting reverse with time.

It is also a good time to buy some fresh transmission fluid too. Some garages might be naughty and re-use the stuff they drain out prior to removing the gearbox; dont let them do this.
