Hi All,

Looking to purchase a mk1 eunos or mx5 in the next couple of months.

Prices seem to be all over the place, could anyone state roughly what one should be looking to pay for Below, Average, Good respectively?

I'm a complete novice, but rusty sills appears to be the biggest problem with these, so I'd be looking to try and get one that's had that work done already.

Also as a side note, 1.6 or 1.8? I know if 1.6 we want pre '94 don't we.

Thanks

Below £800-1000 if you want something that has an mot but needs work
Average £1500+
Good £2500 upwards to £10k+ for special or low mileage cars.

But there a lot of chancers out there trying to get good money for below average cars. Occasional bargain gems do exist but unlikely to do so on forums or pistonheads.

Just my opinion though and prices rose a lot in 2017

Been looking at prices as thinking of selling my Mk1 limited edition, and prices seem to have risen loads.

Nothing under £1k looked remotely usable - so much so might just keep the Mk1 as can see it going up in value over time.

Just seen this on nutz. Looks like it could be worth an investigation if you were looking for something in average condition....

I have no association with the car or seller just thought it looked good for the price

Unless you really know what your looking for with regards to rust I’d be looking at buying one from a dealer or an import. I had one for 12 months 4 years ago sub £1000 sills had been done but we’re rusting again. Enjoyed it for 12 months did a European road trip to Spa and sold on for what I paid. I’d go 1.8 next time felt that on motorways the 1.6 just didn’t have long enough gearing maybe the 1.8 would cruise better. This one looks nice

Checked the mot history, advisories for chassis damage put me off

like the seller said that could just be the box section on the floor that isn't especially structural and is damaged on 85% of mk1 MX5

That's my car. I can't see any evidence of chassis damage on it (nor have the last 9 MOT inspectors), apart from some dents to the chassis rails underneath. The paint lets it down, hence the price.

The exchange rate with the yen seems to be restricting imports at the moment.

I bagged mine in 2014 from Goodwood Sportscars, I thought it was a bit steep at £3500 but it is absolutely rust free, has never let me down and is just a joy to blat about in.

A good recent import would be my choice and rustproof the hell out of it.

I bought my V-Special from Goodwood in March 2016, and by then, the price was up around £4,500.

Recent imprts look to be between £5,500 and £6,000 and I have heard they are moving on to other marques as the Mk1 Eunos bubble has burst due to rising prices.

Mine was fully dinitrolled by Preserve & Protect and has only done around 2,500 miles since import. She lives in the garage over winter and is immaculate, however, due to lack of use I may put her up for sale later this year.

Problem is, i'd want top dollar as i'm now in for around £8,500 including everything i've upgraded/modified.

Mine is a 1.6 91 which I paid £1100 for! In very good condition aswel! But i'm pretty sure the lady selling the car didn't really know much about it and just wanted to get rid of it but it hadn't been abused and the rust wasn't bad either for it's age!

Nice, i've just paid double that exactly. 1991 1.6 imported 2007 with 70k on the clock. No rust as far as I can tell. Undersealed yearly and garaged over winter.

Nice work! Mine is a boggo 1.6 Eunos and gets a right pummelling - I’m averaging 7500 a year in what should be my third car. It will be entering hill climbs and sprints this year......

I really want to get into hillclimbing this summer, can you recommend a club to join?

I’m looking at the Classic Marques Sports Car Club. They operate a handicap scoring system that appears at first viewing to level the playing field to avoid the “deep wallet always wins”.

I’ve not joined yet but have had lots of discussion with them and am currently waiting for my National B Speed licence to land before joining them. They do hillclimbs and sprints across England but it seemed a bit biased towards Midlands and the South
