Saw one on the way into work tonight and forgot how much I like the look of them. I realise they look a little dated now but still have a good ammount of road presence I feel.

So once I sell the Tiv and pay off some of the money it's cost me over the last 2 1/2 years, I'm going to be in the market for a Jap car. Ideally I'd like a nice R32 (possibly R33) but I'm curious to find out peoples opinions on the GTO twin turbo, they're pretty cheap right now and could be a good inbetween car while I save up for a Skyline.

So normal questions really, obviously they're not that economical but that's not really important!! ;) Ummm, reliability, parts, driveability, road holding, speed, braking, anything to look out for, common problems etc etc.

Cheers chaps :):)

You can certainly pick up a mid '90's GTO cheap enough (low re-sale),why not go straight for the 'liner? It seems all but the top flight ones are coming down in price.

Ultimately I'd like a nice GTR V-TEC, but the GTS-T's seem pretty reasonably priced, other than the single turbo and RWD, how else do they differ? Is handling and the general driving experience pretty good? By the looks of it they can obtain similar power outputs to the big boy Skylines. Not that I'd go balls-out and soup it right up, but I'd be nice to have something that could come near to the Tiv experience with the addition of having a small degree of practicality!!

edit: Tuttle, just looked in your profile, thats a beautiful looking car you have there, I presume that is/was a GTS-T??

Yes it is a GTST & thanks for the compliment. That carb fib GTR spoiler is a bit ostentatious innit? Quite fancy one of those Do Luck smoothed boot lip type spoilers.

Try grabbing Shadowninja's ear(big power GTR) for his thoughts.
GTR Vs GTS? (plz excuse waffle-can't ..help it....must..resist...)
The GTR IS the boss car,no real argument.GTS isn't by any means miles behind tho, & the driving experience is still pretty damn satisfying, imho.
Obviously a lot is down to how far you want to go/spend.
The power can be done.
Handling can be done.
Unless your're talking about a full transplant
the main thing you can't get into a GTS is the GTR's 4wd attessa system(not full-time 4wd,it tells the fronts when & how much to bite). Its one of the GTR's real strong points, imo.
Our car feels really well planted on the road,I think the handling(for size/weight) is exceptional, but if I jump from it into a GTR,GTR does feel that much more planted.(erm...actually haven't been in a stanard 'liner for quite a while

A GTS is really a great allround car,it won't disapoint. It can fend off most contenders, rapid B roads & fast, distance cruising are both a joy.I would say that it does seem to need a bit of minor'fettling' to free up its potential.Built to last & generally trouble free.
Prices for R33 GTR's are still fairly high(<£12k),whilst the bottom seems to have dropped from its little brothers market.(<£4k or <£7k for good/better examples).
We love our skyline! ( ).

I've got a little GTO, its only my second car but i really do love it.
Sure its not like having a skyline or supra because they simply have so much potential with their engines, but it depends what your after.
The problem with this car imo is that the V6 takes up a LOT of space and makes it awkwards to manover around, altho I have seen a 750bhp GTO, sounded great.
If you want a skyline, just wait for it.

One last thing, I think the GTO mk1 looks WAY better than a skyline or a supra and its a touch rarer, anyway make sure you get what your after.

They all rock anyway.

Cheers for the replies chaps.

I do LOVE the look of the GTO, IMO it's the best looking Jap car out of them all. But the more I read about them the more I'm put off. The general vibe seems to be, very expensive when the toys break (suspension, steering etc) and not very exciting to drive. I know they are fast, but alot of people have said that the active suspension and 4wd steering take away from the driving pleasure. Also quite a heavy thing too.

Like I said above, the Holy Grail for me in the next 3 or 4 years is a good GTR, but in the forseeable future (once I've recovered a little from the huge dent the Tiv has left in my pocket!) I think I'm going to start looking at a decent GTS. By the looks of things, £5-£7k should get me a decent one.

Power-wise, it'd be nice to be on the good side of 250-275bhp!! How easily is this achivable? I guess alot have already been tickered with so it's just a matter of looking for one that's been done well and looked after.

On the R33 models, were there any major revisions that'd be better to go for? Are the service intervals and costs as high as the GTRs? Anything else?

Sorry for the barrage of questions chaps but my heads been full of TVR for the last 3 years and I'm just getting into the jap car scene.

No probs Dan,any excuse to 'big up' our cars

A dead stock GTST should make 240bhp as is.The kind of figure you mentioned above would be easily obtainable,my route would be: Apexi air cone, decat & a nice hi-flo,wide bored s/s 'zorst -ah! music to your ears. Will sound nearly as good as the tiv.I'd strongly recc an EBC too(will raise to a poss ~top 290's bhp now). The Garrett ceramic turbo runs,as stock, 0.4 & 0.6bar & is good for a shade under 1.0bar safely. That lot will prob see off around £1k.

RB25DET engine is pretty tough & can take a fair bit of abuse.

Dan, if your after a GTO - ONLY get one from the owners club imo, as somone said in another post some plonkers do have them and dont know squat about em...mistreated ect.
Parts for our cars are quite expensive when you shop at mitsu, but most of us use the guys from gtouk, who have set up their own shops which are FAR cheaper.

I certainly cannot be bothered to upgrade any major engine components on this car because its just not worth it. This is where I do think other owners end up with many problems, the more you adjust the more unstable [costly] it seems to be.

Its a shame because the shell of the car is very cool, its just heavy and its more of a long distance car than a sports car... guess the GT bit fits.

For me personally its a fantastic 2nd car, from a golf mk2 to a GTO is brilliant.

well there is the GTS-4. not sure if they made them in the R33, but the R32 GTS-4 is 2.0 turbo 4wd and not exactly slow. they made them in both the coupe and sedan body so you can even choose how many doors you want...

(oh yeah and both R32 shapes are a lot lighter than the '33)

Manual gearbox is my main requirement but has to be K reg on. Otherwise I'm possibly interested in the exhaust / uprated and lowered suspension. I've just noticed that you are in Aberdeenshire. So am I which is a coincidence. What colour is the car?

Thanks,

Robert

Nothing mechanical I know of, but there was a cosmetic facelift around 1996. Whether you prefer the 'before' or 'after' is up to you

Hi Mark, has this car been sitting for a few months in a garage in Peterhead by any chance? If so, then it's a J reg and the box may not be any good for me (but would need to count the splines on the outputs before I was certain). I can't see your mail address but please send me a mail re the exhaust ie how much you want. Thanks, Robert.
