Really hoping it's not the chain! Better would be that I'm just imagining things!

Car is nearly 90,000 miles and has just had a major service with Suzuki.

Thanks in advance!

Bearing noise, alternator or the tensioner
Need to whip the aux belt off and start it up to be sure

Thanks for responding!

Well that's not good, I was hoping it was just my imagination!

Am I best off getting this sorted ASAP do you think? We rarely use the car and money is very tight at the moment but I don't want it ruining the whole engine if I don't get it replaced.

Could well be a/c compressor.

They run their own belt so you could just cut it off on the basis that you’ll replace it anyway if you attend to the compressor.

It’s a good idea to look at whatever the issue is as it will only get worse.

Unfortunately I can't afford to get it fixed just yet as we're expecting a new arrival in the next couple of weeks!

Is there anything I can do to help it in the meantime? I'm trying to drive it as little as possible but I've got a longer journey to make (50 miles each way) next week that I can't postpone.

As soon as money is sorted, I'll take it in to be checked but it's wound me up as it's only just had a major service from Suzuki.

Went to 2 independent garages today, one was said it definitely wasn't the tappets but was also non-comittal saying the noise is definitely coming from by the drive belt but it could be one of 4 things: alternator (everything is charging okay if that makes a difference) water pump, tensioner or a bearing. He said the noise wasn't too bad and he would advise to continue as normal until the noise gets louder, however I can fit it in with him sooner if I want.

The other thinks it's definitely the water pump, he has quoted me £180 for the whole job.

Waiting to take it into Suzuki as unless I drive it there myself, they won't drive it and want a low loader to collect it instead.

Quick update:

Suzuki have collected the car and have said that they can't find a fault with the car at all.

They're going to leave it overnight and have another look tomorrow when it's 'cold'.

I'll keep this thread updated when I hear more tomorrow.

I have the car back now, they couldn't find a fault at all and said everything is "healthy and normal".

We haven't driven it since they dropped it off but when I do I'll be able to see if there is any change or if the phantom noise is still there.
