My housemate was talking to an American at a posh lunch last week.

The nice man was telling him at length about his race-prepped RX7 that "Laps the Nurburg ring in 3 minutes"

LMAO thats brilliant, god bless America....

3 mins? Did his '7 have wings and a propeller?

Some people just end up believing their own BS if they say it often enough.

I think it's just people doing the old.:
Exhaust ... must be about 10hp
intake ... must be about 25hp
etc etc

They believe the e-bay adverts that say this stuff so just add them all together. They dont actually stop to think hang on a sec I might be being lied to...

I think this, plus lack of understanding is the crux of many bs bhp figs. Many will take the advertisers gain claim as gospel & add it to the next max gain item bought & so forth.
Occasionly you gotta sympathise,if someone pours a heap of ca$h into his/her car because a mag or a mate said so,he's going to want to see some returns,in the form of kudos or bragging rights,or even real power.
I imagine he may feel a bit of a tw@t if he discovered that the hard earned £3 grand sunk into his car had only bagged him half a dozen ponies
The modifiying *scene* encourages young kids to part with their hard earned & to stick all sorts of tat over their cars. All but one or two of the mags are just advertising platforms, the amount of engineering info is almost zero, could usually fit on half a page.
... ops: sorry,turning into a rant

I'll get me coat.

Ah, but what makes it worse is that there are certain dynos that read massively high too, so these people can get print outs too.....

I do believe this due to incorrect weighting on the rolling road, unless I am much mistaken,

There are lots of factors.. Changeing the dyno/ user Inertia settings is a big one, as is ramp rates, dodgy atmos corection (I've seen 30 degree atmos temp in December ) , high coastdown figs

You name it i've heard a story about it being done, or seen it done

Simple answer is numbers sell tuning packages.

Carry on sah. I'm nodding in agreement over here.

Yep couldnt agree more. There really is a need for a hardcore tech Jap mag, but even though J Tuner started with this promise it hasnt really materialised.

I suppose the trouble is once you have covered the basics you start repeating yourself. I used to love CCC for its tech articles, something in that vain would be excellent.

Those foggies are for sva/mot, agreed, it's such a tacky way to do it.The 'liner came with one like that.I removed it & wired the fog light to one of the reversing lamps with a 21watt red bulb, easy peasy.
Nice car tho, looks well in black, prob has the potential for 500bhp, he's not really done himself any favours tho not enough info in the ad,imo.

I agree with all of this.

Recently a guy I know in the my local was telling me his Saxo VTR (100bhp) version could thrash my Type R because he had a straight through exhaust, induction kit and a chip!.

Now I don't profess to knowing a great deal about the oily bits but I reckoned my 200bhp Civic could eat it so I said fancy a drag from 20 - 100 on our 'private road'? which is a bit like the quiet section of the A34 near where I live.

Anyway as you can probably guess he gets trounced by a massive margin in front of his girlfriends (read:local slappers).

Now because some people have heard about it, apparently the reason he lost, he keeps telling people was because my Civic is running in excess of 270bhp which is really amazing since the engine is standard!.

I found this story increadibly funny and have told everyone who has asked that my car is standard.

I know I really should not have had a drag race with him but just got really fed up with the BS.

I just nod along when people mention things like power outputs and nurburgring times, went there for the first time recently and first lap was around 12-13 minutes, even on subsequent laps I doubt i would have got below the 10 minute mark, wasn't timing them but I wasn't that fast and the first lap time came from the footage we took from the start to the end.

So anyone that says he can do an 8 and a bit minute lap in a clio would see me nodding along and ignoring them.

RB Will on here was on the trip with us and he took us out for a few laps in his P1, awesome laps and we weren't hanging about at all, nothing came past us and a lot of the locals were moving out of the way.
