My quest for a light, agile car is over! I just picked up a nice JDM AW11 G-Ltd:

The pictures are from the previous owner, I'll get some decent ones once I've cleaned her up a bit. More details to follow...

I had a uk AW11 1988 model, was good fun it is an amazingly "chuckable" car. Fun rev limit as well 8000rpm in a 20 year old motor has to be respected

Tempted by one myself. Despite being a proper petrol head, I also have a thing about open cars, so might look into a T-bar.

I considered a mk1, but I lived by the sea, and gooduns were very far between... Loks like a nice example anyway! Got any plans for it?

Thanks guys, it all seems pretty solid, only a tiny spot of rust in the 'well' behind the rear tyre - the wheel arches are rock solid thumbup

The engine was a bit sooted up, as it was previously owned by a middle-aged lady, but a couple of good thrashes up to the redline cleaned the plugs up a treat.

The handling is fantastic, it feels like a go-kart after the skyline, and very nimble.

No major plans, just tidy it up, maybe fit a decent stereo and enjoy!

cool! welcome to the MK1 clan

I like the old MK1a's with the colour coded seats etc. We had great fun last weekend chucking 2 of our MK1's (NA & SC) around Mallory on track. They are fun round corners

PS: get along to some MK1 events (www.mr2mk1club.com)(www.imoc.co.uk as i organise quite a few different sorts of stuff for mk1'ers

enjoy

I've just brought a 1989 1600 twin cam model - any common issues technically with the car that I might prevent rather than something bite me while driving?

I've always regretted selling my MK1 T Bar, although it did help fund the Carlos Sainz GT4

I'm actually looking at getting another one as a daily runner myself, they're great cars yes

Long time ready first time poster here!

I am in Australia and have just had a MK1 Supercharged imported for trackdays, sprints etc. Its been a long long process to get it here and all being well I will take delivery of it in the next few days. At the moment it is sat in the importers workshop awaiting new seatbelts before it can be registered.

Its got 82,000KMS on the clock and looking at the condition of the rest of it I would say that the KMS are nearly genuine. It has got adjustable shocks and upgraded springs, Cusco exhaust manifold and 2.5-3inch system (VERY loud) and a HKS induction kit. I havent been able to see if it has an aftermarket pulley kit yet.

future plans for it in no particular order:
Bucket seat
Harness
Roll Cage
Big brake discs and Celica GT4 calipers
Anti roll bars
Bush kit
Semi Slicks on lightweight rims
And maybe in the distant future a turbo conversion which is very popular here at the moment.

Thanks Jo, I like the orange one in your profile, very tasty! Not much chance of me getting along to any UK meets though, as I've emigrated down under! Ta for the invite though

Indeed. To reiterate you cannot leave a rustspot on these cars. Once the tinworm gets a hold it is very hard to get rid of. I recommend rubbing the spot down with a wire brush then applying por15

Actually mine is going to be used for road rallying and not too worried about making it all that mint..

Does anyone know much about any mechanical problems? Mine seems to have a worn 3rd gear syncro although it doesn't jump out of gear but I heard that this can be a problem are there any other common drivetrain or other probs?

Not really heard of them popping out of 3rd - the more common problem is popping out of 5th.
second hand gear boxes are not hard to find - may be easier than rebuilding yours. expect to pay £60-£100 for a second hand one.

Even better than that, you can replace the 5th gear with the gearbox in situ.
