I quite like this. It's been getting reasonable reviews down here and they look quite good on the road. As for torque steer I doubt it'd be any worse than the VXR Astra - the Mazda probably has a better chassis underneath. I don't see the lack of 4WD as a huge disadvantage either - if you drive smoothly (as you should on public roads) then it's unlikely that not having 4WD will hinder your enjoyment, and even the challenge of driving smoothly with all that power going through the fronts would I think be quite fun; just lift off to tuck the nose in, smooth, progressive acceleration rather than stabbing the throttle like a 17 year old with no care for his tires, you get the point.

I'd have one of these over the VXR, and it looks better than the Focus in my opinion.

Ali.

No offence, but anyone willing to pay £20k-odd for one of these when you can pick up a UK-spec EU import Impreza WRX for less than £15k, requires sectioning under the Mental Health Act.

But it's not 20k odd, it's 19k. By the time it's as common as a base model Impreza I'm sure it'll be available for less than 15k via a supermarket...

Ah, but you've got to add the 'mandatory' bodykit (see above), which brings it close to 20k by my reckoning (19k list price), not to mention metallic paint if you so desire...

In addition, aren't they limiting the number to 1000? Unlikely to get many bargains at supermarkets if that's the case, at least not in the near future.

As a 3-month old ex-demo, loaded with satnav, sunroof etc, for 16-17k, it would make more sense.

The Mazda3 MPS is designed for a global market and annual production will be more than 10,000 units in 2007.

I'd suspect that most of that is for the US market and the 1k UK figure is what they expect to get orders for.

The sports pack is a customer option. metallic/mica pain doesn't appear to be a cost option, merely a choice.

19k + 500 = 19-odd, not 20 odd

ex-demo would be signinficantly less as with any other marque.

The WRX deal is certainly a good one but this is the 3's top model, maybe equivalent in range to the STI-something or other... you pay something for the cachet of the halo model.

Fair enough.

If you get a go in one soon, I'd be interested to hear how it drives.

Should i say it looks a bit understated.......or a little dull.
Maybe thats a good thing it may stop all the hooded chav's wanting to nick and race their mates in the corsa's and saxo's!
Given its competition and price tag you would probably opt for the VW GTI, hold its value/better build quality etc.
Or just be sensible and buy an RX8 scratchchin

Not sure which VW/Audi you have experienced. Whilst the Mazda is a good car, i do own one (RX8) i also own an Audi and have had 2 previously, from a quality point of view its night and day end of story.
The metal is thinner the interior trim is a different league even the leather on the seats is thinner
From a handling point of view and excitement the RX8 is superior but thats it, but obviously you get what you pay for with Japanese cars and likewise Germanic.

2 Audis, a 2.2 coupe and recent A3, which I swoped for the new 6MPS. 1 Volkswagen Golf.
2 previous Mazda 626.
I wasn't critsising either, my experience is both manufacturers have been good in both quality and service, I really don't think VW/ Audi have any advanatage in quality, reliability or customer service when it comes to buying a new car.
