New Evo X revealed in Detroit

Teaser campaign has gone on long enough...

Mitsubishi’s teaser campaign for the forthcoming Evo X, due in 2008, is stretching excitement to breaking point. The Lancer saloon from which it's derived made its world debut at the Detroit auto show, along with an almost-finished concept for the forthcoming Lancer Evo X.

Meanwhile, the more sedate Lancer, which has continuously variable transmission (CVT) as an option for the first time, goes on sale in March.

Prototype X is pretty much the Evo X – perhaps a slightly customised Evo X. Mitsubishi says the sheet metal is the same as the final version, though some of the features on the concept car might not make the final cut.

Under the bonnet, the Prototype X has an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged engine based on the standard new Lancer’s aluminium 4B11 DOHC MIVEC engine and a new electronic all-wheel-drive system called Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC). Prototype X also previews a new automated manual transmission with paddle shifters.

The drivetrain also combines an Active Centre Differential (ACD) with an Active Yaw Control (AYC) rear differential and Active Skid Control (ASC) which, said Mitsubishi, is designed to make the car more useable in everyday driving without compromising performance.

Just wheel it on...

Nice, I like that. Better than any of the previous versions.

I'm not normally a fan ofwinged Japanese sports saloons, but this one's given me a slight woody. Love the wheels and paint in particular - sadly I doubt they'll be on the options list..

Ah, the might Venom's. Look stunning on the shelf, but somehow looked crap on every car fitted with them.

I do quite like the new Evo X. 2 things though. 1) Interior build quality and materials will have to move up a league or two. 2) They'll have to get away from the stupid 4500 mile service intervals for me to even consider getting one.

That deep red looks nice too.

Overall definitely looks more grown up with nicer quality interior, nicer body styling and seems to pack the grunt expected from an Evo. I think there will be little change in the final car that is put in production. Well done Mitsi.

Bigger, uglier - a pastiche of the VII, VIII and IX, and probably heavier/more complex.

Sorry, but Mitsi had a real opportunity to re-mould the 'Evo' brand into something good-looking, and they've squandered it IMHO. Probably drives better than ever though...
