Hmm, mine does that as well, never paid it much attention

Mine's also started popping out of 5th gear, which happens as they get older, don't know if this is connected. It's pretty common for them to start popping out of 5th, I believe the only cure is a replacement gearbox Don't really need 5th anyway, 4th is good for about 155mph!

As i understand it its due to the slanting main shaft giving increased wear? I had mine "fixed", it lasted 11 months, so I took it back under warranty, and it lasted about 13. It wasn't too much hassle, I just used to lean the wife against the gearstick on the motorway.

Apparently popping out of 5th is a common problem - mine doesnt do this, but with only 80k on the clock i would hope not!

as for yours making the whiney noise too - how long has it done it for?

My old mk2 MR2 needed a new alternator at 80k to cure a lound whining noise. It still charged OK but the bearings were shot.

It was a nasty job on the mk2. Had to drop the exhaust and rear suspension subframe to get the alternator out from underneath - there wasn't any space to get it out from above even with the intake plumbing removed.

Cheers,
Pete

Since I got it - with 98,500 on the clock and allegedly a recently replaced gearbox. I've done about 1500 miles - just clocked over the 100k now. I'd put it down to a vacuum leak or something. Ah well. I've got a spare car with a decent gearbox

Took it to garage this morning - whistling noise is nothing to worry about, BUT its developed another noise - a kind of faint gurgling noise which he reckons is a bearing!

could be alternator, cambelt tensioner anything really, hes not sure. He also said if the cambelt goes itll knacker the engine - but ive been told that if it goes on this engine it wont, itll just lose drive??

any idea what the gurgling noise is!?!?! im getting very worried about big bills now

in fact ill post another thread i think for this!

I know that on the Mk2 MR2's that the cambelt has recesses so that if it snaps it won't bend the valves, don't know if this is the same for the Mk1 though.

How does this help if the belt snaps when the valves are open

In any cam postition some of the valves are open, so unless you can stop the pistons moving or keep the cam moving you're on the last train out of bent valve central

Recesses in your cambelt? How does that work then

Engines are either interference designs or not which means that either the valves occupy the same space as the piston (at different times, obviously) or they don't. The cambelt ensures that the timing of the valves is such that the valves don't occupy the same space as the pistons at the same time. If the belt breakes then the valves can stop at a low point (the point used by both the valve and the piston at different times) and then the piston rises and hits the valve. In a non-interference design of engine the valves and the pistons do not use the same space so if the belt breaks and the valve stops at the lowest point then the piston still doesn't hit it.

At least, that's how I understand it.
