I could afford one of these in a couple of years.

A tuned MR2 turbo would, of course, be faster.

And the insurance would probably be cheaper on the MR2.

But still...

NSX...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Refreshingly Jap. Refreshingly different. Undeniably supercar.

I bought my 1991 NSX at £20000, used it for 2 years and put 25000 miles on it without any faults at all, then sold it after those 2 years for £17000.

Compared to my original 1991 MR2 Turbo, the NSX was the much quicker car. The 0-60 is deceptively slow due to long gearing and power at high revs, however it's no slowpoke before the VTEC kicks in.
The engine noise is sublime, the exhaust note is pants. The complete opposite to the Cerb in fact

Basically, I thought the MR2T was a fast car till I owned the NSX and I thought the NSX was a fast car till I owned the Cerb.

Lovely cars though, the best Japanese car out there, in my opinion.

The insurance between the MR2 and NSX was almost identical, due to the NSX being mostly owned by old codgers
The only thing that is going to cost you is a set of rear tyres every 5000 miles, even if you drive like a granny.

If I had 20k, It would be for a NSX

If I had 20k, it would be for an R33 GT-R, or an R32 GT-R if I couldn't get an R33 GT-R.

P.S. That would be at the time of making this reply.

For the NSX?

268bhp in the 3.0L, 276bhp in the 3.2L. Those figures are just the official japanese figures for the gentlemans agreement. It's not unknown for them to be a lot more powerful when tested, topping 300bhp at the fly for the 3.2L

0-60mph is around 5 seconds, but this is misleading as second is geared to 82mph, 30-80mph is particularly impressive. You need to remember that the car is all aluminium, weighs around 1300kgs and revs to 8200rpm.

....and is just about the most fabulous car you can buy for £20-£25k. I cannot think of a car which combines value / quality / performance / handling / reliability / comfort / low running costs / oh, and LOOKS! as well for the money. Anything else in the price range is significantly behind on at least one of these factors. Throw in rarity and it represents a wonderful package which really ought to be some kind of right of passage for a motoring enthuisiast. Buy a nice medium milage example (as I did) and you really should be able to sell on for similar money 2 years or so down the line.
I was concerned about a drop in performance when I bought mine (coming from a 4.3 Chimaera) but it is a deceptively fast car - use the full extent of the rev range and you'll be doing big speeds very quickly. Throw in a few corners and you're as quick as anything. As mentioned, the "quoted" power figure certainly underates the true output of the engine (common practice of course, I'm sure a Supra has more than 286bhp too), would be interested to see what rating I'd get on a rolling road so I may try that soon.
I've just had an exhaust imported from the states to cure the overly quiet exhaust, should sound fabulous both inside & out now

Sorry, I was of the impression that all Jap cars (certainly from this era) had a gentlemans agreement not to produce cars over 286bhp; hence the reason that Skylines, 300ZX TT, Supra & NSX were quoted thus. It's common knowledge I believe that all these cars carry more than the advertised power figure.
Funny how this got dropped along the line though - I'm sure the Scooby / EVO's were the first to officially put out over the agreed figure - anyone know why / when they decided to bin the previously agreed figure?

Trackdemon, it is a damn shame your car wasn't ready for the 21st, I was really looking forward to getting my arse kicked by the NSX!

LOL I wish! Yes, was really hoping to have it back in time. I'm not sure the NSX would have been that much faster than the MR2T though, in fact would probably have been one of the slowest cars on the day given what else was there. Definately one of the best handling though I'd like to think just over 160mph if I make it next time.
