I am wondering about changing my faithful old Volvo for something newer and fresher.

I have been thinking perhaps a Camry or Lexus 300 but am a little wary of repair costs. I read on the Honest John site that a set of tyres and an exhaust system for Lexus would set me back £1700. Is this correct?

The big Japanese cars do seem to offer good value and reliability. With the cash I have loose, I would probably be looking at something around 1998/1999.

What does the team think?

Cheers

98/99 Lexus Gs300 mkII superb build, never known one want an exhaust as there all stainless, only thing to watch is if ur buying one circa 60k miles its had the cam belt and plugs replaced as its not a cheap service.

Only other thing to watch on them is the ball joints as these can wear, other than that they only ever want tyres and brakes when they get serviced, tyres are around £90 quid a corner

Stainless exhaust? So much for the story about exhaust costs on the HJ site. I believe the plugs are around £25 each. Why is that?

Honest John site here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/home/index.htm if you haven't seen it. I think the £1700 referred to the LS series, though if they are stainless steel, they are not likely to be needed.

See under Car by Car breakdown.

Cheers

Plugs are long life supa dupa jobbies that last 60,000miles.

Believe me these are seriously tough cars, I worked with Lexus for 6yrs, and we never I repeat never took an engine apart, except when the muppets thought they were driving a submarine and hydraulic the things, Mk1 GS's did occasionally suffer from head gasket failure, but this was when they had travelled well into six figure mileages.

Honest john says " What to Watch Out For....
Full Lexus service history." about says it all, properly maintained they go on and on

As mentioned earlier watch out for the biggie service, check the ball joints (MOT failure point) and you might have to get the alloys refurbed.

Forget the Camry, and QX this is the only one worth having, also dont be put off by the LS400 just as reliable if not more and the ecomomy is around the same at 23-26mpg in normal use

I had a 1995 Nissan QX and it was excellent.

It had a fantastic leather interior and all the gizmos you could want. No one could believe it only cost me £3000!

It had done 80,000 miles and did not have one rattle or squeek.

I only sold it because I got a Lancer Evo 4, which is a great drive, but a bit of a step backwards in terms of comfort!

If you find a good QX I recommend it!

I owned a Nissan Laurel in the Eighties. Never ever broke down. The only problem I had was a sticking throttle from time to time, which was interesting; especially one time in a stream of traffic on the A500 near Stoke on Trent. Oooer........

Cheers.
