Hi All

Ever since I got my e46 330ci the CD changer has skipped really badly. I was on the verge of buying a DICE or similar to replace it. However, I decided to have one last stab at fixing it. Its working perfectly now so I wanted to share what I did incase it helps anyone else.

The changer in these cars can either be mounted vertically or horizontally. In my 320d its vertical, 330ci its horizontal. The changer itself has a well concealed switch on it that says H or V on it. If this is not set correctly (mine wasnt!) it will skip all over the place

To check / fix it:

Pull back the carpet on that side (left of the boot)
Unscrew the 4 (or in my case 2) 9mm bolts holding the changer in place. Theres a 9mm spanner in the toolkit in the top of the boot incase you havent got one.
Pull the changer unit forward and unplug to two connectors, they only go back in one way so dont worry about which one went where
Remove the unit completely
Remove the two metal 'ears' that are used to mount the unit in the car by unscrewing the two cross head screws on each side
Now you will see the 'switch' in question. You will see a letter H some dots in a semi-circular pattern and a V. One of the dots will be filled in. On mine, the dot next to V was filled in. This means the device is configured to be vertically mounted, however, mine was in horizontally.
To change it, remove the little plastic cover over this, slide the dot round to the correct setting (H in my case) and put it back on
You need to do this on BOTH SIDES of the changer so the dots match.
Once done, put it all back in the way it came out and your changer should no longer skip smile

It took me anout 45 mins but I'm totally useless at this sort of thing. Anyone more competent could easily do in 20 mins.

Hope it helps someone else

Glad it helped, mine has been flawless since too smile Would love to know why so many of the changers are just fitted incorrectly though smile

Mine wasn't fitted this way initially. I had a jammed CD and took it apart to get it out. I hadn't noticed these settings in my rush to put it back together.

Maybe someone did something similar with yours in the past.

Thanks again...saved me some headscratching at least smile

I got my 2004, 330CI a month ago, and I was surprised by the problem with the cd changer skipping. I was under the impression It was outdated technology, it turns out the vertical/horizontal setting was wrong. I followed the instructions and its now working right. Thanks a lot!
