Just got a call from BMW regarding my E60 and I am know booked in for the "fiX". Told it takes about an hour and can be done on a "while you wait".

Hopefully this is start for my fellow E60ers and the rest.

This may be a stupid question (or one that has been previously answered) but where the hell are all these cars ending up? Ringed and back on the UK roads or shipped to Eastern Europe/Africa etc?

Charming.

Just had a nose through the thread and a lot of people are mentioning Diskloks. I used one when I had an R32 many moons ago and it was terrible, might as well have been made of chocolate. I've heard of people taking them to a bodyshop to get more metal welded onto the back to make them harder to remove but this also makes it a massive pain in the backside to use.

No one is saying they're impervious, indeed one person has posted that his was removed by thieves, but as far as I know, they're the best steering lock available, so if you're going to fit one, it may as well be a disklock.

Unless you can suggest a more effective visible deterrent?

It hasn't been confirmed. Theoretically an R56 MINi shares the same technology and potentially the same flaw so would be affected, but in practice I haven't seen any reports.

I think that the consensus on the forum has recognised that the very high parts value of these cars and desirability makes the theft very much more profitable because the thieves can and are turning the thefts into real cash relatively easily. The owners are to an extent victims of the Brand strength. Other cars such as the BMW Mini's are probably just at risk of theft, BUT cannot be fenced for anything like the same value.

Small comfort but I do think that is the primary reason why other brands who have similar primary security flaws are not on the missing list. Just not as easily fenced.

So... I sold my 530d on a 56 plate a few weeks ago however just had a call from Rybrook down the road...

Even though BMW were adamant my car wasn't eligible (being a Nov 06 car with key fob not blade) they now say it is and were inviting me in for a software update...

A friend of the family had her 4 week old Fiesta nicked a couple of weeks ago from outside her house during the night. She still has the keys.

The Police told her that 50 Fiestas had been stolen in the past month in the East London area.

Similar here - 2 months ago local BMW dealer adamant my car (55 plate) wasn't affected even though I argued that actually no I think it is.

Phone call today to offer me the software upgrade.

Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Similarily, I'd be curious to know what the stats on all the nicked BMW's is regarding percentage of cars nicked that had comfort access option vs. those without.

Hi Guys,
I had my 08 M3 nicked last Sat night/Sun morning. By the time I reported theft to Trafficmaster, the tracker was not sending a signal.
Now, what was interesting - and where I would like expert advice - is about what Trafficmaster told me about their tracking system.
They say that when the car is started, the tracker sends its last parked location.
They say the last transmission located it at my local shops (and not on my drive from which it was nicked). I had indeed been to the local shops earler in the day and that was my last journey.
Hence it sounds like thieves did not clone key and use it to drive off.
Trafficmaster also say that if the car is rolled onto a lowloader, the movement without ignition being used will also cause an alert to be transmitted.
I guess the thieves could have cloned the key, opened the car, found the tracker and ripped it out, then driven off. But that would surely have taken a lot of time unless they knew where to look?
Does anyone know details of the Trafficmaster system? Are they telling me BS? Or if the thieves are just getting more clever?
Any input would be appreciated.

I am extremely sorry to hear of the theft of your car. It does seem to me that the thieves or their informants are clearly at least as up to date as the manufacturers and security firms in the car business, Very possibly better informed.

The whole security question on these cars is clearly a very complicated issue, In your case the fact that the tracker did not give ANY information, out on movement, last position etc MUST be a real concern.

It does seem to me that the scumbag scrotes who are involved in this have better access to the reality of how these security systems can be scuppered than all of the owners of the cars, the manufacturers and the supposed experts in vehicle security.

There will have to be a major change in limiting access via the OBD ports and other similar devices which clearly compromises the security of all the effected vehicles. I think the only way to avoid the problem currently in urban areas is to not buy the affected brand of cars.

I appreciate that this is not welcome news. But rereading the post above definitely suggests to me that there is, as yet NO REAL DEFENCE to determined thieves on the affected cars.

I do not think the tracker failing to operate correctly is a coincidence in any way shape or form. The scrotes clearly have a means of effecting silence upon the tracker. I doubt if the tracker makers yet know how.

I'm fairly new to this one but read on a site explaining the move of the OBD port that it is cars 2006 to 2011; so a car ordered in November now, would be safeguarded; will it?

Hard to answer, in theory Yes but to me what would be different about e.g. a 2012 E92 to make it not at risk compared to a 2007? They've said the latest F-models are OK but I don't know about the E-models which are still sold.

well what about a new M135i? Is that likely to have security concerns; couldn't/haven't BMW moved the OBD port and changed some software or whatever? I confess I haven't checked out all 128 pages of this thread so I might have missed plenty
