How many miles should a 520d be able to do?
Discussion
I understand this is like asking how long a piece of string but I've now had my F11 520d for just under 18months and 45000 miles. This car has been my best work vehicle by far. Comfortable , extremely econimical to run , the only downside is the lack of performance but considering the majority of my miles is on a motorway now it's not really a problem.
So I bought the car with a good 8% discount at the time but the latest trade offer was just £18000 for my fully loaded car. I can't see the point in selling it as to get anything with near the same spec is £40000 + so I'm thinking of doing something crazy and keeping it till it dies.
So how many miles if the car is well maintained do you think a new 520d automatic can cover ?

Well a friend runs one of the last E60 520d autos, bought 6mths old with 6k on it, now 30months old wih just over 100k on it, had its first set of discs and pads at about 85k, just servicing and tyres otherwise.
Like yours value now well shagged, past 100k the unknown is how long till something breaks after 3yrs with no warranty to fall back on, if the engine went bang big style it could write the car off

At the moment, your car is about run in.
Rather than change for the sake of it, why not compromise and get an extended BMW warranty (will cost) and keep running the 520?
The car has a warranty until 100000 miles so I'll be ok upto the end of the 3rd year of ownership. I'll see what the car is worth at the end of 3 years and 90000 miles on it . If I can get £12000 for it at that time I might change otherwise I'm going to run this sucker to the ground which will hopefully see me to 200000 miles.Rather than change for the sake of it, why not compromise and get an extended BMW warranty (will cost) and keep running the 520?
Gulp....
You do see stories of people who have the DPF go over and over again (even on motorway driven cars) and that gets expensive once out of the warranty.
The other regular thing is the turbo failing, usually at something over 100K miles.
I don't know how new car sales are going generally, but all my colleagues (opt out ex-company car users) seem to be hanging on to their cars now. It's become a real novelty for someone to get a new car.

As with any car it basically it all depends on how much you're prepared to spend on it to keep it going.
Look after it properly, with correct servicing and replace parts when required and the car should easily see 300K miles and beyond!
Most cars do not make mega mileage because owners decide that it's not financially viable to spend the money on the car any more, not because the car cannot do it.

Of course it'll do 200k. As long as you change the degrading fluids and other consumables like exhausts, discs and pads, it will go further. I think you should keep it for life and go for half a million!
Just reiterate if you rea keeping and doinf big mileage find an auto transmission specialist and get the gearbox fluid flushed and changed ecery 60k niles imho!My brother has a 2008 E60 with 200k on the clock.
Up to about 170k it was impeccable (didn't even need brakes until 150k!!) but it's had some big bills since - New turbo and DPF, and a couple of smaller things like a MAF and seized caliper (under use I suspect!).
Drives like it's done a quarter of the mileage and still does 50 mpg.

And that's what kills them off!Up to about 170k it was impeccable (didn't even need brakes until 150k!!) but it's had some big bills since - New turbo and DPF, and a couple of smaller things like a MAF and seized caliper (under use I suspect!).

When some of the bigger parts come to the end of their natural life, it's more expensive to repair the car than replace it so the car gets scrapped off!
Pay the money and replace the parts and the car will go another 200K miles.
(It's also the reason that, comparatively speaking, so few cars make it to classic status: The cost of keeping them on the road is higher than the cost of replacing them)
