High mileage N47 without problems (120D, 320D, 520D etc)
Discussion
Morning, Thought I'd reply with my thoughts if I may, I have a 520d business class with 150k on her, she's on a 59 plate and to be honest she's as good as new, I bought the car with 120k as high mileages don't bother me (providing it has a good history),unfortunately the dreaded cam chain snapped at 130k (Was booked in the next week as well to be changed ) cost me £900 to repair but no piston or valve damage, only smashed the cam carrier and ten rockers, The chain was repaired by Walkers of Rochdale (He's on Facebook), The only other work I have done is to reline all the brakes, I'm a bit OCD about brakes btw, other than that I have had a remap and the DPF removed (gutted), didn't go mad with the remap but the extra torque is superb...

Yep, I wouldn't be touching the DPF on any car now, BMW DPFs are rated for 300k miles, no need to take them away, and they rarely die unless you dont drive the car like a diesel i.e 20k miles p/a
I am running a 318d E91 2012 N47, 85k on it, just had major weld on the flexi, they had to remove the DPF and weld that too, but no way would I be removing it the way the MOTs are going now.
No issues with running a N47 either (had a 2008 118d N47, got that upto 170k), good engines if serviced well, but like most things, the average motorist doesn't even know how to change a wheel, let alone book there car in more interim oil services

I have a 07 318D.
I first noticed a noise coming form the engine at 145 000 km. I took it to the dealer and they said it had a "minor cam chain noise".
As long as the noise did not get worse, it would be fine they said. They also recommended an extra oil change in between the regular intervals.
Now at 170 000 km, the noise is still the same, as far as I can tell. Fingers crossed it will do another 170k km.

You may want to try Ceratec noise wise and yes continue keeping fingers crossed. 😀 It's a hard wearing ceramic engine coating, very slippery at that.
People on this form have had positive results with it - myself included (my case was not chain related issue though - M54 engine with bullet proof chain - just noisy and notchy gearbox and hesitant revs pick-up - 250k miles...). Very happy ever since.

Yup, another vote for Ceratec! It's quietened down the chain on my 2011 N47!
I found an alternative solution - I sold my 123d with the N47 in 2014 and bought an E86 with a 3 litre petrol engine! And I've had 3 more straight 6 petrols since then - I just wish I had bought a 130i instead of a 123d. Mr Tidy said:
