Have you ever either been driven in a modern diesel or driven one?

And I suspect the majority of those who drive a modern diesel would be very impressed for any number of reasons, and do you know what.....they even sound quite good (new D3......) The 640D is an amazing piece of engineering and I'm convinced you'll always have those who think you can't like a diesel simply because they used to be st in the '70's and '80's and it's still cool to hate them, be a proper Petrolhead and be one of the lads

I'm in the fortunate position to have an M5 but wouldn't be disappointed driving around in a 535D to be honest and if the 550D was offered in the UK I'd be having one of those next without doubt. I've driven huge mileages in both petrol and diesels and both have their virtues. I ran a 4.8iS X5 for 12 months and 36,000 miles a few years ago and frankly aside from the engine noise it was a st car......bugger me, a V8 which is st Christ above I the ran a 535D for 70,000 miles over two and a bit years and do you know what? It was a peach of a car. Fast, comfortable, frugal and more than I had expected and I still miss it. That's not to say I decided never to have a petrol again, I have now got probably one of the best everyday petrol supercars you can run on a daily basis, and it too is brilliant......and it's petrol.

I agree, it's all about application, the X5 with that V8 in was always going to be a bit silly. And as a high mileage cruiser the 535d more than aquits itself, for sure. But in this thread we were, (originally) talking about the application of a rattly 4 pot diesel in top down motoring,(and they are rattly still), and apart from MPG there is no reason to spoil the roof off experience with that engine. In the past few years i have had a go in an A4 diesel convertible and a 318i convertible. the Audi was miles faster but with the roof down i would have to take the Under powered petrol beemer because the derv rattle at the lights ruined the rag top experience in that car, where as you don't need to be going fast with the wind in your hair to enjoying it.
all cars have flaws and compromises, but i've yet to see one poster on a thread about there new diesel when questioned say, i wanted it because MPG is higher in my priority list than other things. If they did i would say Kudos, i don't hate diesels, they have there applications that make sense. In high mileage reps cars, large heavy 4X4's, taxis, Limos, (but fuel saving in a 100k+ S class always looks a bit silly), and at a push big GT cars like the 640d, (although i would personally rather the V8 or the straight 6 in that coupe). But for pootling around in a 3 series convertible? wrong application IMHO. But if the OP values MPG over refinement then Kudos- enjoy.

We won't have another. After having an N47'd 1-series. NVH is poor and the economy's not worth the compromise. Some diesels are great though, I'll grant you that. The little 1.5 unit that Renault use/d in my old Clio was superb and is still kicking out 60+mpg 12yrs on in my mum's ownership. I also loved the 1.7DTR I had in BX form and that was an 80s unit. Superb at for its purpose and never tried to be something it's not.
ETA: But then not everyone's the same and if the OP is happy then that's all that matters. It was a fair point by Fox though.
Just got back from Gatwick BMW . Proxy m25 and m23 gridlocked in places , still managed 51 mpg though
First impressions are good . Brakes didn't feel that great but noticed they changed front discs too so being new will take a few miles to bed in . Steering feels a lot heavier than the passat at low speeds but I can live with that . Radio is average at best . Multimedia is great . I thought it would be a harsh ride having 19's and harder suspension but it's fine . It's also quick enough too . Just had a blast round block with roof down , feels great , have a new wind deflector arriving in a few days but won't use that often having a daughter in the back . Yes you do hear the diesel when you start her up but once you get going it's hardly noticeable . Anyway I love it . Thanks for all the comments positive and negative . I will post pics once I work it out lol

Don't understand why anyone would want to have a diesel engine in a convertible - the manufacturer goes to all that trouble of putting in sound-deadening material to hide the noise from the engine, then lops the roof off so you're exposed to it in all it's gory detail.
If I was in charge, all convertibles would be powered by petrol.

Because some people don't care?Someone way really just want the wind in their hair, acceptable performance to move them to the their destination and the frugality of an oil burner... but not give a tiddly little st about the noise because 'that's what cars sound like'.
Personally I don't see the point in a BMW with fewer than 6 cylinders powered by petrol and a nice solid roof over my head. But that's me and what I find appealing in a car.

My 184bhp 320d feels faster than my previous 218bhp 325i did. Maybe not 0-60 but certainly in gear from around 40-70mph.
Be interested to see some test figures.
I never get 'in gear' performance? Be interested to see some test figures.
With a petrol you need to change down to get it in the power band, so unless you do this a 180hp diesel will be faster than a NA 220hp petrol.
If anything, this thread shows that we really shouldn't moan about companies like BMW 'diluting the brand' offering loads of different options, because we all like different things.
Personally I prefer petrols, I have swapped my E350 cdi for an E350 cgi and now got rid of my diesel F25 X3 for an X83 3.0i, but I would be more than happy with another big diesel, but not in a cab.
