iPhone 5 Connection - Y Cable
Discussion
Hoping for some helps here guys.
My OH's BMW commuter, a 2014 318d came with only basic bluetooth, and then the USB/3.5mm jack in the arm rest.
Went to BMW, asked for a cable to connect her iPhone so she could stream through the stereo. When we plug a USB in, it recognises the USB and allows music to be played. Put in the Y Cable, and it doesnt recognise anything.
What are we doing wrong?

Hi, I had a similar issue with my car. There are a few Y cables available and for the iPhone 5 you need one with what is called the Lightning adapter. I can't say if this will work with your set up. My initial cable only charged the phone but it wouldn't recognise it on the screen of the car.
The whole iPhone to BMW connectivity is a bit confusing. My first F10 had extended Bluetooth as standard so you just plugged the Apple cable in and it worked with album artwork on the screen. Extended Bluetooth was dropped as standard on the new car but I didn't realise the implications of this until the car arrived.

Get one of these - problem solved...
Plug this gozmo into your 3.5mm jack. Bluetooth on the phone and device and off you go. Cheap workable alternative !

Ii don't understand your post, if it works through the regular USB cable then why would you need the Y cable?
Streaming via Bluetooth is something completely different - and can be enabled via coding if you desired.
Basically, if she plugs the standard cable into USB, and she wants to select albums, tracks etc she has to open the armrest, get the iPhone out, and do it on the phone itself. Streaming via Bluetooth is something completely different - and can be enabled via coding if you desired.
She would like to be able to use it with the cable supplied by BMW, so that she can select albums, tracks etc through the iDrive, or the steering wheel.
Unfortunatly, as mentioned, Advanced Bluetooth wasn't something mentioned to her when ordering the car. She asked if it had bluetooth, they confirmed. Annoying for her, bluetooth in her Yaris, My Civic, My Focus etc, even the Transit van all meant it synced for music. But spent 30k+ on a new BMW, and it doesn't
