Agree it is a load of nonsense, but most use a rubber band.........And that generally has a shorter life!
But if you are going to put it all at the back of the engine at least make it last surely?!
Still I'm relieved I bailed out of my N47 last year though.
Straight 6 N/A petrol for me now!

You'd be surprised - about the only modern car with a cam belt now is the Ecotec GM unit. Afaik just about everything has a chain now. But if you are going to put it all at the back of the engine at least make it last surely?!

Hi, does anybody know if the QE PDF dated 15.01.2015 is the most up to date? I have had the upper timing chain and tensioner replaced by Arden BMW but now the car sounds worse than before it went in!! I am being told it may be the lower timing chain or the balance shafts.
However I have read the QE PDF and it says that bothtiming chains must be replaced if extension is found. I have argued this with Arden BMW and they are telling me that this QE PDF is out of date and they only had to change the upper one chain.

Just had mine in for the recall/QE - they did the tensioners and upper chain (only took them one day) so would be interested to know if you get more info on this!! Its also left a rattle in the cabin (on the dashboard, below the windscreen) at idle which I think I will have to take up with them, as it wasn't there before it went in!However I have read the QE PDF and it says that bothtiming chains must be replaced if extension is found. Mr Tidy glad you said Straight six N/A because the new 3ltr Twin Turbo petrol 340i 440i has the Chains in the bowels of the engine in the back now!!!
Funnily enough I read that the other day and thought here they go again..........This, turbo, HPFP and injector issues are why I think I will avoid anything later than an N52 engine!

its an E91... would they have come loose from the work carried out? Very convenient that it ties in perfectly with a trip to the dealer.
I expect the strut braces to be removed for the repair. http://gallery.xpowerforums.com/data/571/05Jul2009...

[quote=(steven)]So what is the deal here?
Anyone with a N47 engined car can get their timing chain looked at/replaced free of charge?
There has to be more to it?

Can anyone send me a link to or a copy of the PDF QE announcement please?
I had (until last week) a N47 118d. Full BMW dealer service history, and the QE never got as far as me. Driving down the m4 last week the timing chain went ping and my car is now worth nothing more than scrap. One BMW dealer wants over £1000 to inspect to confirm it is the timing chain even though the engine is ruined and pistons have collided etc.
The most disappointing part for me is that having bought it cash and BMW approved only 18 moths ago, and serviced with the dealer (except one tyre change at another garage) the dealers have washed their hands completely and won't help me at all, they won't even consider a P/Ex for it.
Luckily for them, I am a solicitor, so I have just sent them a letter of claim and will be off to the county court in a week or so, fitness for purpose and all that, so the QE would be very useful.
Thanks
