E61 V8 Bearding
Discussion
It's really good in practice, my current Leon Cupra has it standard fit.. very rarely need over half a turn of lock in any situation. I'd have it again and I'd spec it too if it was a reasonable price... but like all tech it could be an expensive nightmare if it goes wrong.
Which tbh is a constant reminder of why I'm in a new warrantied Cupra rather than an older more interesting V8! I just can't be arsed with the worry/hassle of the better car!

Anyway, it's fundamentally flawed being a saloon, I'm oot.

I've also liked the pagid/mobil standard stuff, but I never do lots of really stressful braking.

I have been having a number of issues with my 550 recently and I have finally decided to take it to a garage to get them looked especially after my latest rather embarrassing issue.
I use my 550 to tow the caravan (it's fun beating Mr White van man off the line) and I was taking the caravan for a service. As I mainly use my i3, I forgot I didn't have enough of petrol in the car to get me there, so went to Sainsburys to put some in. Normally wouldn't touch the stuff but Shell was too far away and not that suitable for the car+caravan.
Filled up and then went to start the car. Nothing. Stuck the meter on the (new) battery and it was a bit low. Not a problem got an big AGM battery in the caravan which I ended up not having to use in my previous E Class. Only problem....No jump start on forecourt. Pushed them both off, and then jumped car from caravan (how embarrassing is that?).
Issue 1 - Battery Drain issue.
Issue 2 - Warning lights and code for left cat. Garage has tested it and CATs will just an MOT on emissions (think I'll get them to put it through), but probably not in future. Both are on the way out. £3k unless I can source cheaper.
Issue 3 - Water in the boot. It is not due to the issue of the sunroof drain tube ends. I ripped the ends off 2 years or so ago when I had that issue. The water is nowhere near as deep. Initial inspection has shown it is coming from up in the headlining and running down. Seems like either the tube has become disconnected somewhere or maybe perished. Looks like the headlining has to come off. This may or may not be related to the battery drain issue, but I feel it is not as the wheel well has not filled up. Garage will trace it back.
Garage has suggested getting rid of it, but I have already had to put a new block and pistons in it shortly after buying it (I think there is something about this much earlier int he the thread), so it owes me too much. Therefore it will continue to live.
Anyone know if it is possible to either rejuvenate the CATs or maybe somewhere I can get cheaper ones from?

That's the problem with these cars now, the moment a big bill pops up you're mindful that they are not worth much. No way I'd be spending £3k on a pair of cats. You could buy a whole car for that as spares - there was that 550i T for sale a couple of month ago for £4750 - did it sell? I'd be tempted to buy some cat replacement pipes [so no cat in them just tubes] and put these on after the MOT then switch the cat pipes back on before the next MOT and so on. If you really want cats then I'd be looking at after market cats and have them fitted to the car by a pro exhaust fab outfit. These might give you an idea -

I know the manual is rare... but here's an even rarer one. A bloody SMG E61 550!!

The closest variant I have driven is an E46 M3. That works relatively well with the S54, but even then I would only like it for driving on track. I found it too jerky during more sedate driving. It's a computer controlled manual basically. They end up being not as smooth as a TQ auto, or as engaging as a manual.
For an M car on track, they work really well, but for a large estate with a V8 it's standard auto for me 6 days a week. The other day is reserved for a manual.

Yeah I was toying with the idea of a 650i manual for - well I dont know what for - but I dont understand what the big thrill is with a manual in a car which is basically a barge. A sports car yes but even then a manual sports car in traffic can be annoying. There is nothing sporty about traffic. For an M car on track, they work really well, but for a large estate with a V8 it's standard auto for me 6 days a week. The other day is reserved for a manual.
