Failed the MOT yesterday on tyres... Hadn't notice damage to the N/S/F. My fault.
Was wearing winters so took the opportunity to swap to a set of all-weathers, despite winter seemingly sneaking up on us.
Cost a few quid but it has also cured a vibration through the steering (damaged tyre out of balance?), which was worth the money on its own.
Car now on 91k (can't remember what it was when I bought it, maybe 75k) and soldiering on with the gearbox a bit gimpy.
Rear pads need doing and I never changed the plugs and coils, despite them sitting in my garage for 16+ months!
Managed to put a dent/ scrape in the O/S passenger door, which is frustrating.
At this point; I think it'll just continue to run it until I'm cajoled into having a 9jnr and then hopefully pick up an X5 4.8iS.

I find myself thinking SUV then I remember a car is so much better and in estate form big enough. My 335i feels tiny compared to the 550i and when you turn the wheel it feels so much more nimble. I've had my eye on this saloon with recon box and valve stem oil seals fixed. I'm curious where the market sees its value.

Recon 'box is around £1k when I looked. Imagine the seals may be a smaller market with specific tools so possibly more costly/ Labour intensive?
X5 would be because Mrs9 doesn't want to have to bend down too much to stick a baby in a car. I don't have to worry any time soon; she's had the flu for a month and I ain't going near her!

The guy selling his 550i above mentions new clutch packs - is that all in within the grand?X5 would be because Mrs9 doesn't want to have to bend down too much to stick a baby in a car. I don't have to worry any time soon; she's had the flu for a month and I ain't going near her!

Hmmm... Clutch packs? Sounds a bit DSG to me... But I'm no auto expert.helix402 said:
I don’t think you’d get any sort or rebuild done to an autobox for 1k. Maybe the outside would be painted silver!
I wouldn't be so sure. I got quotes from respectable places and they're (deep) in this thread. Maybe £1,200 but certainly can be done C£1k on exchange with warranty etc outside of Surrey (where I am). Very, very common 'box with well-known faults and lots of parts availability etc.I'm talking about the ZF auto, not DSG etc.

Sounds like a good price. I'm talking about the ZF auto, not DSG etc.

Yeah I was toying with the idea of a 650i manual for - well I dont know what for - but I dont understand what the big thrill is with a manual in a car which is basically a barge. A sports car yes but even then a manual sports car in traffic can be annoying. There is nothing sporty about traffic.
Mine's a dinky little 530i E39T, but the same argument applies, If you spend your life commuting in and out of a big city-region then fine, automatic. But a lot of us spend very little time in stop-start traffic. Practically none in my case.Removal and refit of the transmission is relatively simple with a lift and the right gear, which transmission specialists have.
I'm not sure how that guy spent £2200 though it does sound like they went belt and braces with the torque converter rebuild, Gearbox rebuild, all new solenoids etc. So, I guess I can see a bill for all of that. That's still only £1k for the 'box plus another grand or so for the torque converter, solenoids etc.
So, depends on your definition of Gearbox rebuild is. A 'box is about a grand or so, drive in, drive out. Additional bits are obviously more. Doing them all future-proofs it, obviously, but costs more. Mine, for example, is a problem with the 'box and not the torque converter, solenoids etc. Thus, if I was selling the car - I'd just do the bits that were required.
Same way people stick a new clutch in when the repair a gearbox on a manual... might as well do it while you're there. But no, splitting a 'box is not expensive. Replacing ancillary parts can be!

Just refilling with the proper fluid is £300 or so, isn't it? Has the price of the right fluid come down now?
Been told £20 a litre for transmission fluid when I was chatting to the guy at the garage when I took my car in.ATM said:
