The drive back was spectacular especially once the Sport button was sussed.
Great cars aren't they. Does yours have an actual Sport button? Mine being an early car just has DWC or some other acronym which eases up the TC and allows some slip. Thats the only difference from what I can tell. And I can put the box into sport by moving the lever across which I generally dont bother with as its fine without

Fantastic result on the on getting the oil stem seals replaced. Cost of this + gaskets is north of £1500 @ a specialist. Enjoy!

Yes Sport button on the centre console just behind the gear lever.
From what I've experienced so far it allows the engine to rev further plus stiffens up the steering and, presumably, suspension.
I suppose I really ought to RFM!

Specialist work probably took 25hrs plus seals, gaskets, lube etc.etc. so well impressed with Hawthorns taking it on the chin.

Is it me or is the auto box a bit clunky, especially when cold?
Cheers, Pewe.

Smooth it ain't. I find it has a fair lurch from first to second.

I wanna say mine isnt jerky. Maybe when cold and its running higher revs but even then I wouldn't call it out. Maybe I expect less.

Wasn't that quite common but fixed with a software upgrade? I had my software upgraded when the oil was changed and any lurch disappeared... and I do seem to remember one (maybe documented in the early days of this thread).

Maybe rubbish but I've heard the update can be difficult and if it doesn't work it can brick the computer. As a result not many garages like to do it or even offer it.

You can also do the old accelerator pedal the floor with the ignition on for 30 seconds, which may or may not reset the fuzzy logic self learning.

Nov 2005 650 here, so road rent: £330.
On 175k miles now. First change of the day from first to second is a bit jerky, but otherwise fine. Gearbox SW was updated at it's first service in my possession back in 2010, Gearbox oil was changed at 120k miles. Oil change made a noticeable difference to change smoothness.

The main dealer is triple that. I know as I just collected my 650i from them.. Luckily, the extended warranty covered this one!

My gearbox oil was changed recently and maybe thats why mine is smooth. I really have no complaints about the box. Its a simple old school slusher and thats what it does.

Fellas

My car has started to lurch or tick over slightly irregularly. So if you are crawling in D without any pressure on the throttle the car used to crawl gently but now the revs hunt very slightly so it doesnt crawl consistently. Is that just age and do I live with it or is something amiss which can be fixed?

Mine crawls consistently if a little speedy for very slow traffic, with AC on, it settles to about ~ 7 mph with revs at about 750rpm. It has been like this since I got it in 2010.

I've noticed a bit of shimy from the front. Before I start buying every suspension arm known to man is there any recommended fixes for this?

The first 550 Touring I bought earlier this year (became known as The Black Dog) had a slight shimmy at motorway speeds.
Local specialist diagnosed a worn steering rack & quoted c£3k to replace (prob included TRE's) but I didn't pursue that.
Needless to say it went back PDQ!
Also another specialist reckoned the front suspension bushes take a bashing due to engine size and weight.
Maybe book it in with a local specialist for an inspection?
Doubtless not be the reply you wanted but HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

Quick update on my old 545 tourer (where has the time gone?). Took her to France for spin this month as part of family hols - over 1'000 miles of joyous motoring on fairly empty roads. The old girl is still running well although at 160k I'm waiting for something to go wrong. Apart from a minor oil leak (touch wood it stays minor) all is good.

I've still not taken my winters off, but then again my summer wheels need a refurb as the tyres leak air.

I've toyed with the idea of 4 season tyres but I do like to throw the big old bus around and can't get away from the idea of having [the correct] tyres designed for the season. This will be my first foray into 17 inch wheels and tyres on this car. They'll have to wait till something like November I'd guess. I really need to have a clear out of my storage which is now over loaded with different wheels and tyres.
