Venue: Dunsfold Wings and Wheels
Timeline/Weather: Sat, fine and sunny, slight cross-wind.
Opposition: Ferrari Testa Rossa.
Result: TR both runs but only by a small margin (reckon it would have been closer if I'd sussed out launch control on the auto box beforehand).
V-max: 140 mph indicated over the end markers and stlll building - needs a longer runway.
Amazing that a relatively modern, five seater family estate can perform almost as well as an 80's supercar - that's progress.

Just put box in sport and choose between selecting drc on or have everything completely off.

Relatively successful weekend of work on the tank smile

Replaced the seal around the panoramic roof, now no more wind noise when travelling above 50mph!

Removed the convoluted rear silencer arrangement and had a simple stainless box fitted instead. Standard-ish tailpipes so doesn't look out of place, and still pretty quiet at normal cruise/part throttle. Has a lovely Brian Blessed-esque roar at full chat now though cool

Sorry dtc.

I normally drive everywhere with dtc on.

I find if you just floor it then depending on the traction available the nanny controls can kick in and it really bogs down. This is without dtc on.

With dtc on it then it will just allow some wheel spin and you're off. But it can still get itself confused and bog down.

With everything off it will never bog down but you might just sit smoking one rear tyre
Ideally try the different setups and see what happens.

The change to 2nd is supposed to be snappier in sport mode on the gearbox but i can't tell the difference myself.

I still recommend never just flooring it. I like to get going a bit with a little stab of the throttle and then floor it.

Apologies if this isn’t allowed, I have a pair of E60/1 pollen filters for sale on eBay if anyone’s interested in a bargain:

96k miles now... got to be 20k since the thread started.

Now have a bit of an oil leak... the drive looks like the negative of a plasterer's radio!

Do I spend money...? Hmmmmm....

Rear brake pads need doing for the next MOT and it's generally a bit dog weary... feels like it'll go on forever and I don't need/ fancy a change but is there a big bill looming?

Same old story here. Car still goes like stink but feels old and tired - maybe. Costs a fortune to fuel but other than the odd new clunk or creak just keeps on trucking.

Off to get my primary silencers removed tomorrow for some more v8 burble.

Had a slight leak on one of them and thought I'd use the excuse.

Hoping for 10% or so louder......

Oil leaks are now an MOT fail so depending on how bad and how strict the tester is you may have no choice other than to address it.

Good luck if you do sell.

I wish the 6er’s were as quick to sell as the 5 (tourings). My 60k mile E64 just had it’s valve stem seals, and leaks, fixed by a main dealer for nearly £5k under the extended warranty. Really high spec, lovely condition. £10k. On Autotrader for 2 weeks and what did I get? 1 timewaster..

Yeah, that's the conundrum. It would really need a 'box refurb and some bodywork (on top of the leak and brakes) to be a good example. What's a 100k miles 545i Touring trading for, less than £5k? £2-3k required to make it a good example, I suspect. Maybe more as narrow lanes at ours have made the nearside a little scratchy!

However, the brake pads will be done and a few other bits (eg oil leak) will be looked at and then I'll make a decision. Don't they like exporting shabby ones back to Europe and doing them up or something?

I have the same conundrum with mine.

Having bought a dog earlier in the year I can do worse than suggest those with ageing, weary cars invest in a "Pre-purchase" report from a local BMW indie such as Grosvenor in Reading and/or PS Autocare in Lydiard Millicent near Swindon.
Both companies charge c.£70 and give a comprehensive (though not perfect) insight into general condition including likely future jobs.
Be aware the dreaded valve stem oil seals, which generally are thought to go at around 100k, can arrive early.
My current 10 plate needed them at c75k!
Warm it up, leave it to tick over for 5mins then give it a real bootfull - if it smokes blue smoke likelihood is they're on their way.
There can be other causes like breathers, filters and oil condition so don't immediately hit the panic button.
As for shelling out to keep them going I answered an ad-hoc survey recently which asked which 3 cars you'd buy for £10k.
I replied by saying my 550i Touring ticked all the boxes - family car, load lugger and supercar all in one - who needs 3?
Cheers, Pewe.

Oh dear - looks like the oil leak curse is spreading. Mine now leaking a lot more. Anyone know a good BMW independent around West London / West of London?

My local in Acton is good but he's too small for jobs like this. Any suggestions welcome - I'd hate this to be the end of road for the old girl as she still drives really well.

I can't imagine why someone would buy 3 cars for 10k in total. If they're 10k each that's a different ball game. I've got 4 right now and itching for another but I told myself 5 is too many.
