I'm used to 430 bhp and 630nm in the 2 series though, and I regularly exploit every drop of it, so although I don't doubt the 550s capability I just think I would find it felt a little heavier and docile to what I am used to.
Of course

Its a big car. And the gearbox is a bit sleepy in normal mode. You can't expect it to be any different.

If you want something more capable you need to be looking at an RS audi or AMG merc or the M5 v10. All of these will still be big and heavy and you will feel that if you try to throw them around. But you may get another 100bhp in the mix. You will be spending twice as much money too.

I occasionally look at the E63 and think thats whats I want but for occasional use there is really no point for me. I only use mine once or twice a week if that. Like this one - below - for example which gives me sleepless nights.

You would probably be better off with a C63 but my big car needs to be bigger, I think.

I'm on the hunt for a car and as much as I want an x5 4.8is, I don't want sub 17mpg, despite the very low mileage I do.

However, it seems that the 545i may offer figures in the low 20s..is this true for round town?
Unfortunately, the budget isn't likely to stretch to a 550i these days.

Does anyone know of any for cars for sale?

I don't think we have any 545 owners here. I get asked about mpg with my 550 a lot. And to be honest I don't really know what mine does. I don't mean to sound arrogant but I just put petrol in and that's that. I don't think you can buy one of these cars if mpg is a concern to you.

My 545i didn't average 20mpg around town, I am sorry to say. In fact, quite a bit less. I think it ended up with a lifetime average below 20mpg over my ownership despite driving to Italy and back, etc (where it could average 25mpg+). Thirsty beast but I do miss it!

My 550i has done 20.9mpg overall since I bought it a couple of years ago (or was it three? Tempus fugit and all that!).
That's a mix of town and motorway but as said above you don't buy them for their fuel consumption smile.
However there are lots of up-sides - my Touring lugs shopping, dogs, off-spring and still has the ability to put a smile on my face every time I gun it!

I average 18 with my B5 Touring, but then if I got over 20 I'd be ashamed I wasn't enjoying it properly biggrin

I've had mine over 6 years. At the time I bought it the obvious diesel choice would have been the 535d. I'd read about diesel related problems with turbos and dpf and whatever else. I hoped the big v8 would be less problematic and that has turned out to be true. The only time my car has let me down has been a weak battery or a burst expansion tank. I think that's pretty good. Especially considering it gets no love at all and I still haven't even changed the spark plugs. Although in recent years its done less than 1000 miles between MOT.

Yes more please! How high does it lift, and do you need a compressor to run it?

Yes runs off the garage compressor.
Lifts about 300mm (12") when using an appropriate jacking block (fits into the jacking point under the sill).
Three bag ones are available.
Flat this one is 120mm (5") which is low enough to fit under a Caterfield type car.
Mine came with metric inlet fitting so I had to swop it for a male threaded Imperial one before using.
Bought from Aveno.co.uk. Be aware they have a 50/50 rating on Trustpilot but so far no problems...
