BMW's Start/Stop & Keyless Drive System issue..
Discussion
Nothing new, my 2004 Renault Megane would do the same. I got home once and my mum come out to meet me, asked to borrow the car to visit my aunty. I hopped out and she drove off. It was only on her return she & I realised the key card was in my wallet! There were no warnings on that car, it was lucky she didn't turn it off.
The reason I assumed was as above, if the battery goes flat or something happens to the key the car doesnt just cut out in the middle of the motorway.
I cant say I've left mine running yet, if the engine isnt running the radio being on and the dash lit up is enough for me to realise the cars still on.

I have a 2016 220d m sport. Today, I parked it, and must have got out of the car without turning it off with the button. I locked it...the engine was not running. 10 mins later I came back and the engine was running.
I am surprised that that the auto stop / start did not restart the engine as it normally does as soon as I took my foot off the brake, before I got out of the car....but it did not! Not convinced that there isn't something not right here.

I think that's normal, it's nothing new to be expected to turn the car off when you leave it, as others have said, if the car cut out as soon as the key was undetectable then there would be carnage.
