Time for a new engine? 2010 320i E91
Discussion
No worries. The Nxx engine has never been great really. A great idea when new but plagued with dramas. Originally it was a valvetronic unit and Valvetronic was BMW's willy waving technical dead end that nobody else tried to copy - they've dropped it now. The N42 came first (late 2001) followed by the virtually identical N46. The N45 was the non v'tronic 116i unit from 2005 and the N43 is the 2 litre direct injection version of that. They have been a nightmare for coil packs as well. With a good rebuild it should be okay for a while yet.

Christ, the N43 of death. It's done well to get to 106'000 miles. A bottom end rebuild will probably be needed but at least the crank is the same as the older N42/N46 unit - for some reason these don't often have crank problems even though it's the same part. A good used crank, new shells and bolts, a chain and guide rail kit and a new oil pump. Also ask the garage to closely inspect the oil pick up pipe as these can fracture, causing the pump to pick up air as well as oil.
These four cylinder N engines are fking rubbish, they really are. N for nightmare.
Well you were bang on!These four cylinder N engines are fking rubbish, they really are. N for nightmare.
Basically, it's a bottom end rebuild that's needed. Without taking it apart, he's not sure what will need sorting but it's definitely at the bottom that the noise is coming from. It's only really noisy about 2500rpm & it's when running at that speed for a period of time I get the "oil pressure" warning so it's not the worst he's heard which I suppose is a bonus - of sorts.
Cost wise, from £1400 to £2500 depending on what needs replacing. Dealer is washing his hands of it & it's my problem apparently (I've got another thread in SP&L).
All in all, I've had better days - on the plus side though, we took our son to see Captain America & it was excellent

Did you ever get this sorted? If so how much did it cost as I am having the same problem
Lots. The chain guide rails break up and bits clog the oil pick. The engine then cannot supply enough oil and it runs a crank bearing or two. If you catch it in time, you can remove the sump (a lovely task involving dropping the front subframe) and remove/empty out the pick up pipe before replacing the timing chain and guides. You're looking at about a grand for that lot. It's done a crank bearing, it's had it. The red light is basically game over. If it just flickers at idle when hot, it can be worn out balance shaft bearings.
Etc, etc, etc. A good* used engine with a new chain kit fitted is probably a couple of grand.

Thanks for the reply, had my timing chain and guides replaced last year and had my car assessed and need a new oil pump, big end bearings.
