F11 535D N57 Engine failure!
Discussion
I think when I had the problem initially a new engine with no fitting was around £12k and they had them sat on the shelf in the UK.
I haven’t really heard much from them at all but as someone said this won’t be claimed on my warranty as its only just been rebuilt so fitted parts warranty or whatever they deem the cause to be. They said it cylinder 6 big end this time rather cylinder 1 last time. My guess is swarf from the last failure in an oil cooler or turbo line etc which has then killed the new engine. Ever since it was rebuilt I commented to them the oil temp got hotter than it used to although they weren’t concerned. My biggest concern moving forwards is any damage to the turbo’s from the 2 engine failures as I really need it to be reliable!

I would love to know what the original cause of this is and to see if we can do any preventative maintenance , my bet is on blocked oil way ( sludge or even foreign body ) ultimately caused by to long oil change intervals ???
They never found out apparently, I always got the car serviced sooner than the CBS based intervals but still was around 15k miles between oil changes (Better than the 19k the i drive recommends) They inspected the centre main for evidence of it running low on oil which they said was fine and no signs of that. Main problem now is that the engine is dead again! Its really knocked my confidence with the car and partly the brand but maybe I just need to get over that.Ninja59 said:
Probably more to do with the warranty side than anything. As for the replacement engine I hope you get it soon. Not good news (more so as a 35d/40d owner!)
Will you be keeping it greater than 3years? Will you then carry on the drivetrain OEM warranty? Will you carry on OEM servicing? If yes to these zero worry Also it's exceptionally rare

My intended one is 5 years for the car, will probably carry on with a form of OEM warranty possibly the comprehensive one (I know it is pricy, but I do a fair amount of miles so will be worth the outlay) and I can continue my funding of my MK3 MX5.Also it's exceptionally rare
True fair comment.

You should do the maths as all up the years 4&5 could be more costly than an actual new replacement vehicle.
I’ve still not got my car back I have had it back many times since my last post but just had problem after problem! Supposed to be picking it up today just waiting to hear if its ready, Fingers crossed all sorted now as its been a nightmare! Will do full update once I’ve got it back.

Just seen two ex Police 330ds with the N57 for sale on the bay. Both with knocking engines....
You do realise there are thousands upon thousands of these engines in use in U.K. USA Europe. Generally engines shouldn't go wrong but sometimes they do in exceptionally rare occasions. Possibly there is a much higher rate of failure on mapped engines than stock engines.
