There used to be a device called Intravee (I think) which plugged into the CD changer socket at the back of the headunit and provided an AUX connection for an iPod or similar. I hooked one up to my E46 back in the day.

Not sure if it's still sold or whether there are more sophisticated ways of doing it now. But in all honesty, you might be better off just replacing the headunit with something more modern which gives you the additional functionality.

You can get a cable to plug into the existing radio, have a look on eBay. BMW even make a retrofit cable kit.

I fitted one in my Z4 which has similar radio set up to e46 and yes - very easy, but it has affected the factory Bluetooth which now doesn't work as I think you can't have aux in and factory Bluetooth.
