I think you are confused the last iron block 3ltr BMW was the 231bhp unit ie the 286bhp x35d. The 3ltr 330d has done the following
184bhp E46 5 speed auto tailpipies down turned
204bhp E46 6 Speed auto straight tailpipes like the 330i/all inline 6's
231bhp E90 6 speed auto
245bhp E90 6 speed auto alloy from now onwards
258bhp F30 8 Speed auto
The 335d has done
286bhp E90 6 speed auto
313bhp F30 8 speed auto alloy
The 535d
272bhp E60 6 speed auto
286bhp E60 6 speed auto
299bhp F10 8 speed auto alloy now inwards
313bhp F10 8 speed auto

I cannot recall the 530d's changes through its life none the less what I find very interesting is that with each incarnation you get more power but you also get more Mpg and like for like it's genuine.
To think the original 330d managed 8.3 seconds to 62mph and 32mpg which at the time was mighty impressive to today 5.6seconds 56mpg and 40% more power. How long before a standard 330d from BMW produces 300bhp out of the box and sneaks under 5 seconds to 62mph. It is the accountants car - whereas the 535d is the naughty accoubtants car. And the C5 RS6 is a madman.

Grip off the line staggering

Starting it up
Wide open throttle through tunnels with roof and windows down.
The ability to overtake literally anything without issue.
5 speed with 3rd good for 120mph so 40mph overtakes drop to 3rd foot to the floor hold on v
The fact I ran one for a year as a daily - bonkers but fun.
It's utterly manic top end 5,000-7,500 rpm was a wail into a scream from the engine.
Annoying bits - I found that every single commute I'd be blasting through the 100mph very often
You had chavs in Motuned up Focus STs at the lights
Concerns about reliability/if anything goes wrong it's going to be a huge cost.
Couldn't park it anywhere it's a highly desirable and easily stolen vehicle.
Knew petrol station staff very very well
But for most of my drives the 535d wouldn't have been that far behind with well well over double the economy zero reliability concerns modern safe etc.

Iron to Alu change was M57 to N57 - all F10's have N57 engines from start of production. September 11 production, for MY12, moved to the revised N57 offering 313bhp in the 35d and 258bhp in the 30d.They are easily spotted by the presence of the start/stop on/off button under the Engine Start button in the cabin.
