What's up everyone. I've recently set up my account on piston heads to find out if anyone knows anywhere than converts E46 SMG's to Manual?
Also, are there any of you SMG owners out there that would be interested in having your BMW converted?
It's my understanding that 70% (or there abouts) of the original E46's came out of the factory SMG but not everybody that ended up with one neccessarily wanted one so I'm curious to know if there is at all a market for the convertion.
I'd be greatful for any feedback I get!

There is a litle but for the costs involved you are better doing one of two things:

1) Buying a manual
2) Doing it yourself. IIRC you need the following to do the job:

-Manual gearbox (you swap the bellhousings across) or get the SMG one machine to accept the manual gubbins
-Gear shifter bracket to take the manual shifter ; I do wonder if you need this if you get a CAI or AKG shifter...
-Clutch pedal, master cylinder, slave cylinder and pipework
-Clutch ; you can reuse your old one but while you are in there...
-Sensors, but you can get a few of these from the donor gearbox
-Coding ; I believe NCS-Expert can do this.

A couple of guys have converted their cars and used a manual gearbox but have noticed the shifting quality or some of the syncros are not all that. Sticking with the SMG item seems to get around this; I guess the gearbox is a known entity.
